Wayne State University to drop math requirements. ("Diversity" and math apparently can't coexist)

Students at Wayne State University no longer have to take a single math course to graduate, and may soon be required to take a diversity course, instead.

“This decision was made largely because the current (math) requirement is at a level already required by most high school mathematics curriculum," the school explained in an announcement to students obtained by The Detroit Free Press.

“What we’re finding is a lot of students need remediation in math. They’re not at a high school level.” Tweet This

According to The Daily Caller, WSU asserts on its website that its general education “provides a shared educational experience that imparts knowledge and expertise essential for all undergraduate students regardless of their major or interests.” However, almost one-third of WSU students have to take remedial classes during their first year at the school, which would suggest that many students could benefit from taking high school-level math courses at the university.

Awesome.

Dumber people equals less competition for me.

No cursive, proper grammar is racist, and no math.

Hank Williams Jr.’s lyrics were right, we’re replacing “the law of the land, with the law of the jungle”.

Come to college (and go into debt) and get the education your parents already paid for with their property taxes but which you were too much of a dumb **** to get the first time around!

I wouldn’t send my child to half of today’s colleges and universities. They’re a waste of money.

A child is better off with an ASE certification than with most degrees put out by the majority of universities.

To be inclusive, school curricula must not be so difficult that the unintelligent, unmotivated or just plain lazy students can't pass.

They then receive accreditation for knowledge they do not have damaging themselves, their futures and the nation.

Please, take your children out of government education.

Wayne State just devalued the worth of their degrees.

Imho of course.

At the university from which I just retired the two most popular freshman courses were remedial math and remedial English (not ESL, these are native speakers). That's essentially dead time for undergraduate education and adds exactly that much to the overall cost. These are also the least popular courses to teach for obvious reasons.

Grandly declaring that certain majors do not need more than grade-school mathematics or English composition is very revealing. A psychology or sociology major who is ignorant of statistics is crippled. A literature major who cannot create a sentence out of a subject and a predicate is intellectually dead. STEM majors will never even get started. And when the entirety of Critical Thinking devolves to "how do I work this into a Marxian narrative?" what you have isn't even education. It isn't even decent indoctrination.

You get what you reward, and that is as true of colleges as it is of students. If you reward graduation rates and racial diversity and the performance of athletic teams that's what you'll get, and never mind how corrupt they become, and the university, and the degrees awarded, become degraded and corrupted as well.

Dark-skinned individuals, and females do not do well in math, so math must be racist. Drop it. Don’t ask why other countries are beating us in fields needing math.

Heck, even a basic teaching credential is difficult without math. There are lots of districts that have teacher competency exams.

I would think this level of math (High School) should be provided for prospective teachers. Unless they want them to fail?

Reminds me of the old DC high school math test that went something like “..If Jamal had a pound of weed and there are 16 ounces in a pound and Antwan wanted to buy a quarter of a pound, how many ounces would Antwan be buying?...

This is why we are importing people. It’s not only the highly educated H1B tech people, it is the marginally educated workers from countries like Mexico. The typical American doesn’t even have the aptitude to work a trade or service job.
