At its national conference, Norways governing Høyre party announced that it plans to scrap a mandatory airline tax connected to last year's closure of Oslo Rygge Airport.
The party wants to replace the flat fee with a new type of tax that would have a clear environmental effect, reports newspaper Dagbladet.
The proposal, which came from the Østfold division of the party, was made at the end of a debate on transport. [ ]
RSL closed down operations on November 1st 2016 following Ryanairs decision to cease using the airport after the introduction of the tax. Around 1,000 people are estimated to have lost their jobs as a result of the closure, reports Dagbladet.

Make the travelers step on the scales and pay a tax based upon weight.
Why pay any tax at all?
The weight tax correlates with the changes in the environment.
It is simple to calculate.
A rose by any other name.
And it’s still a tax.
This is a corpse flower rather than a rose.
In other words, they want to replace a tax with a bigger tax.
This is likely a big deal in Norway. That place is rugged as hell, fjords and mountains make it hard to get around easily in reasonable time by ground transport. Lots of people fly a lot.
People respond to taxes....
Impose taxes and the masses will move around them.
Tax travelers based upon weight. Only skinny people will travel.
Well, they’ll certainly succeed in driving away more airlines and closing more airports, then.
Why push the social engineering? Bad enough the government does it. Taxation per se has already cost Oslo one airport.
Taxes based on weight are are universally fair.
Just think about applying this rule to football (soccer) or to basketball.
Basketball should have a height-based scoring system. Goals made by folks over six feet tall would count less than sub-six feet goals.
Perhaps, taxes should be based up ....race, national heritage, or left-handedness.
It’s Norwegian issue (travel taxes) and they can do whatever they want.
It’s been fun playing the game, but, really, the topic should be thorough vetting of travelers and banning the bad hombres.
You seem to have a penchant for taxes, with weight as a secondary pet peeve. I can’t see any conservatism in that, with all due respect.
That’s like saying the USSR could do whatever they want.
The taxers’ goal is world conquest. Should we, as Americans who have stood against such illicit goals and for freedom, let them do whatever they want?
Replace all flights with sleds and longships.
Much more environmentally friendly.
