A Boycott of Wegmans for Selling Trump’s Wine Has Seriously Backfired
Grub Street ^ | February 17, 2017 | Clint Rainey

Posted on 02/18/2017 11:28:47 PM PST by Trump20162020

Earlier this week, Wegmans became the latest company to face a backlash for carrying Trump-owned products. The supermarket chain sells five different Trump Winery wines at its ten stores in Virginia, where the vineyard is located, and a local chapter of the National Organization for Women called on its notoriously loyal fanbase to boycott Wegmans unless it agreed to remove the products from stores statewide. The company responded that it bases inventory “solely on how well [a product] sells,” and welcomed shoppers to “demonstrate their convictions.” Seeing that as an encouraging sign, a group called Stop Trump Wine materialized with a Twitter account and website, where visitors could pledge support, and news stories reported angry people were vowing to shop elsewhere. Boycotters probably felt things were looking pretty good.

Unfortunately for them, Trump supporters have fired back, and it’s not a pretty sight. As the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports today:

A boycott of Trump Winery products at Wegmans has caused just the opposite effect: Five of the wine varieties have sold out at the two Richmond-area Wegmans stores.

Vino locale - used to get 5 liter jugs for under 2 Mille and it ranged from slightly fermented Welch's Grape juice to kerosene.

Loved the local wines while stationed there.

Meanwhile, here is something the Trump family ought to find a way to step up on and make some sort of historical site. Perhaps Don Jr. and Eric could donate the funds for the purchase, and then they could have some appropriate associates oversee it being made into preservation site. This is just a short train/bus/drive from NYC and ought to be featured for school trips, etc.

The Vineyard is in Virginia? A quick check finds Virgina is the 14th largest wine producing state with a million gallons per year. Otherwise not much, anyone try this wine?

Lol... I didn't know that. Honestly my big concern is sulfites. I am going to need a filter they are marketing now to get rid of them when I aerate my wine. I'm a tequila guy myself. The complexity of flavor and variety is amazing and I only need a quarter shot to make a perfect sipping experience. This works out perfectly given that would be less than 30 calories in the worst case scenario. 🙂

In my humble opinion, conflating wine discrimination with being a wine snob is like confusing legal immigration with illegal immigration.

Perhaps women don’t know about the boycott. How soon before the progressives start painting yellow stars on store windows?

Wine isn’t something you buy/don’t buy based on a name.

You're right. I buy based if it comes in a box or not.

I prefer tequila too, but leave room for mescal. A sip of Illegal brand mescal, joven or anejo, is a transcendent experience.

I haven’t looked to be honest but since wine isn’t sold in grocery stores, it’s kind of a moot point.

I know what wines I like and buy them only according to my fairly non-discriminating taste buds and ability to smell. But I would have boycotted Wegman’s just to make the point.... Too bad there isn’t a Wegman’s close around here.

Hey - thanks for the recommendation. I do enjoy some mescals but have much less 'validated research' on choice brands. Any advice helps.

I enjoy one that is more of an Digestif, it's called "Del Maguey Crema de Mezcal". It's mescal with a infusion of agave syrup. Smokey sweet. Very unique. I enjoy it but it may be too different for some people. I still recommend it for the experience. I will look for "Illegal" at Total Wino (heh...) Cheers!
