The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings everyone. What a beautiful day God has granted us here in Missouri. Nice 60 degree and sunny today and tomorrow. Plan to get out and do some patio clean up on Saturday.

The garlic is doing well, only a few little spots of brown from the freezing temps. Winter lettuce growing slowly under the row covers.

We have received our seeds from Baker's Creek. I'll be ordering some potatoes a little later. I really like the Butte Russets, and the Yukon golds. We are in the planning stages for setting up the sunroom/greenhouse.

Received some of the long-term #10 cans of dehydrated food that we ordered. The shortage of veggies has already hit in Europe and prices are tripled. Seems like a good idea to restock the pantry now, just in case prices go up here too.

Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all, and for our country. God Bless.

"The shortage of veggies has already hit in Europe and prices are tripled."

Thanks for the heads-up, and thanks keeping this going during the cold winter months.
My asparagus and garlic are slumbering under 18-inches of snow, but just knowing they are there brings a smile to my face.
And the chickens are down to their usual winter slow-down, but still look healthy and producing yummy eggs.

I added some newly-bought potting soil to my indoor plants two weeks ago and it rejuvenated the soil, bringing up about a dozen stalks with little shamrocks of a shamrock plant I thought was dormant. Speaking of, I’m looking forward to buying about eight new shamrock plants when the garden center puts them out for St. Paddy’s Day.

Hi, All:

I live in VA. When is the best time to cut back my lilacs. I think I know, but I hear different things.

Thanks

Hi, All:

Again...

I live in zone 7, maybe 7a, 45 miles from the Pentagon. A nursery owner here says I can forget about growing roses. Says the humidity is just too much.

I never have rose success unless it’s with Knockouts.

Is he right? Is it just too much trouble, and is humidity the cause.

He’s owned the nursery for 39 years; I gotta believe he knows a thing or two.

Thanks

Greetings from southern New Hampshire, where he predicted 1-3” ended up 18”! I am dug out and ready for the next, for which, we already have a warning.

We are going to try out the Parks Bio Domes for starting seeds this year. I got two, which Barb confiscated, already. She is going to order one more.

Thank God for a tractor-mounted snow thrower! Coop cleaning and dump run tomorrow.

I know people who grow roses in the deep south. BUT it’s nearly a full time job involving LOTS of chemicals and effort. I grow knockouts for that reason. I can’t afford the chemicals and would rather spend the time growing food. YMMV.

I wish I had chickens, except I’m glad I don’t have them in the winter. LOL

We are talking to a friend of my daughter about maybe getting the chickens and letting her take care of them, while we split the bounty.

Thanks for the beautiful pictures. Is that a current harvest? Where are you located?

I saw that Park’s sale last week and considered getting one. Time got away from me and the offer disappeared. Rats. I use their blue/green plastic trays for my black seed starter inserts. Love them. They’ve got some other stuff I want but we’re waiting to see how bad the tax lady will be before I spend anything major.

I envy you the snow. It’s 70 and sunny here today. I’ll be planting corn on Monday. My figs are coming out as are my blueberries. The blueberries are in full bloom today.

Hopefully this will be a good garden year for everyone!

I need to do that too. I am thinking about planting some carrots indoors in a square pot, since I never got around to planting a fall crop for spring harvest.

Lol! No, I live in snow-covered New York City.

I was just trying to set the mood for the thread.

But I sure wish I did somewhere in the country.

Well, he probably does know a lot, so I wouldn’t argue about it. I would do a search though on roses vs humidity. Perhaps there are some that are better suited than others.

The only roses that I am growing are the Rosa Rugosa, because they have olive sized Rose hips.

Many people ask for a list on NON-GMO and Heirloom seed companies on a weekly basis. I have compiled a list of the most highly regarded companies, from a list on I made on 12/30/14.
Enjoy your planting!

Thanks so much for that list. I’m finding more and more research questioning the advisability of eating GMO. Since the labels aren’t required on food, that’s one reason why I prefer to grow my own.

Even if it was safe, I’d still grow heirloom, because I object to a company owning the food supply.
