INternet service

What do you think about Xfinity? I currently have Rhinobee which is a microwave type internet service. I have been happy with this and have found it vastly superior to the Hughes and the Wild Blue satellite we had previously. With the satellite, we frequently went over the data limit. With Rhinobee, there was no data limit, no contract or term limits, but it is about $150 a month, internet only.

The new place I am moving to has Xfinity already. Of course I'd have to get the service switched over to my name. It has a one year minimum contract. I assume the first year rate is a good rate and it increases after that. I haven't gotten an answer on data limit yet, but most land line system seem to have them. How much speed do I need? I homeschool a child so we watch a number of Kahn Academy videos as well as other such things.

Thanks

I don’t like the idea of giving NBC any money.

I dumped Comcast years ago because their infrastructure stunk at the time. Good Internet speed in the middle of the night. During primetime, not so much.

At least around here, their infrastructure is still copper, so I’d be concerned that the same situation exists...or could very easily exist when it is oversubscribed.

It depends on the time of day, but getting Xfinity can work well for your needs.

We have a 75 Mb with Burst service and it is fine except for periods around 6:30-7:30 PM and 9:30-10:30 PM.

We figure it is a large amount of competing local traffic that stops our connection.

Xfinity = Comcast. It’s what I have because it’s the only game in town where I live if you want more than rural wireless slow speed internet. Someone will find something nefarious about the ownership of any provider, but they are not going to feel any pain from you not being a customer. I hate Comcast’s terrible customer service but again, it’s the only choice and the bandwidth and generally the reliability is very good.

I’m paying $70/month for xfinity unlimited gigabit service. It’s worth every penny.

By the time the contract is done, google fiber will be in the neighborhood driving down the price even more.

It’s going to be the fastest option unless you can get fiber. I have 200Mb service it’s always been great, just not cheap. I used to work for them as well.

I have Xfinity internet service only, 25 Mbps download. Cost is $68.62 incl. taxes however I own my modem and router. One terabyte plan.

Speed has been adequate for my and my brother’s concurrent use as a guest.

I live in an apartment complex where Xfinitity is the only available choice.

I am very happy with it, especially after receiving an upgrade to their new platform last year.

I work at home and am on the Internet all day and night. Their Internet service is fast, the cable TV is fine, and I really enjoy the TV interface with voice commands.

Also, they have good customer service.

I would recommend it with no reservations.

We changed from Xfinity to Uverse. Multiple users couldn’t be on Xfinity at once

We switched over to Xfinity from DSL several years ago. It’s been more reliable than DSL and it’s much faster. We’re in a suburban location so that’s probably helped prevent the speed dropouts that others have complained about.

Rhinobee which is a microwave type internet service.

I've heard of "smart" phones and "smart" TVs. Now they have microwaves that can access the internet? :)

Pretty typical for me. I test this during the day all the time. $79/mo. Comcast.

I had it for a few years. Loved it. Now I have another company and can not wait to move back so I can have it again. If you like music, get the package with Music Choice. If I am stressed, I listen to SoundScapes. I turn the lights off, get in one of my recliners and relax. We had Comcast for about 30 years.

Fred,
Is that ookla window you posted an App? I have local internet service from a local ISP (va Broadband) and I’m not pleased with their service, Thai restaurant reliability, or their business practices. I’d like to have an App that shows me the speeds of my connection at various times of day. Thanks.

TC

I have xfinity - only game in town except for DSL from Verizon and I am quite pleased with my Comcast.

We do quite a bit of streaming - tv, netflix, etc. and have no real issues except for the dreaded dinnertime slowdown. I think they may have a data cap but we never go anywhere near it.

I’ve used the microwave delivered internet, it was slower than xfinity but it cost about half what xfinity cost.

surprised they are charging you that much.

http://www.speedtest.net/

Make sure you click "Begin Test" at the top of the PC monitor graphic. There are some other buttons on that screen that may download junkware you want to avoid. There is also an ookla app for your phone.

You can also try this: https://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ However, make sure you sample a number of destinations. Speakeasy's sites are sometime the source of a holdup, rather than your connection per se. Generally, I've found speedtest to be more reliable.

They do not. Comcast flirted with a 300 GB/month data cap about three years ago. They've since given up on it (and sent customers a letter saying so.)

I think they are talking about a 250GB per month cap, but haven’t implemented it yet. Lady time I checked we were at a fraction of that, even with watching a series of shows on Netflix.

They told me a terabite and if I exceeded it I could sign un for unlimited at an additional $50 a month.
