The Model 1911 is my absolute favorite handgun.

It would have been nice when discussing the origins of the 1911 in the early days to show a real 1911 in the photograph that accompanied the article. The one shown is a 1911A1.

I have a few handguns, but my 1911 is my favorite.

I should say my 1911’s.

1911 is a good gun. Any well-made modern design semi is better.

John Browning even designed the Winchester’s Model 60 .22 single shot rifle made four years in the 1930’s that put meat on the table for many depression era families. Don’t forget the Browning 9mm. The list goes on and on.

Probably the most ergonomic handgun ever made IMHO. Yes I know all of the arguments for the newer automatics, but the feel of the single stack in your hand, the way it grips when you bring it up on target, there just isn’t anything else like it.

Again, JMHO, YMMV

— I suspect that they fear either the sniper with a 1500 yard half minute group capable rifle or a helicopter gunship popping above the hill, trees or whatever ——and hardly give a thought to whatever handgun anyone might have-—

I have one that was manufactured in the Springfield Armory in 1914 - still shoots great. It’s an eternal design.

Same design, I guess, but my Llama Minimax .45 is an awesome weapon. You can laugh all you want, but it is. And, the Llama Minimax 9mm Jordanian models are superbly finished and are excellent shooters too, if you can even find one. I know a lot of purists don't care for them, but, some of us really like them.

Star also made some really nice pistols. The Sig P938 is unparalleled for compact carry purpose, accuracy and overall excellent design.

I have a Remington R1 which is just a copy of a Colt. It’s the basic R1 model and with rebates came in under $500. Cocked and locked in the bedside table. Steel and real wood, made in the USA.

“Melee weapons”? I smell a D&D player...

Hmm, I have been itching to get another 1911 for some time now. I had one for a while back in the late '80s - early '90s (AMT Hardballer Longslide) that I got in a trade (and it left the same way, when a co-worker of mine was worried that his HK91 would soon become illegal due to Bush 41 and Clinton. Even swap!).

I'm not looking to go full custom, Wilson Combat or equivalent. Just something faithful to the original, priced in the mid-range. If anyone has one of the Ruger SR1911s, I'd appreciate a brief review.

can someone explain why so many 1911 owners seem to carry in the cocked position?

Carried it as top side watch and shore patrol. Couldn’t hit a damn thing with it.

Right out of their boxes, 5-6yrs ago, these 2 Kimbers were flawless. And after 1,500+ rnds thru each, now fitted w/ laser grips, still flawless.

People often forget that the .45 ACP was adopted because the .38 Special did not have enough “stopping power” to deal with MUSLIM Moro Philippine tribesmen then in rebellion!

Have no idea where it is now, but in 1971, a 1911 pistol with the serial number 000086 was sitting in a USAR arms room in Webster, New York.
