The move limits access to one of the few remaining channels for readers in mainland China to read The Times without resorting to special software. The government began blocking The Timess websites in 2012, after a series of articles on the wealth amassed by the family of Wen Jiabao, who was then prime minister, but it had struggled in recent months to prevent readers from using the Chinese-language app.
Apple removed both the English-language and Chinese-language apps from the iTunes store in China on Dec. 23. Apps from other international publications, including The Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal, were still available in the app store.

I don’t like to see this kowtowing to China either, but as one company officer told me in an interview, “Either you’re in the Chinese market or you’re not a player.” It is certainly a huge chunk of business. I’m guessing that Apple had little choice in the matter. And, while I see the point that banning Apple hurts China, believe me, it hurts Apple much more.
On the good side, where there is a will, there is a way. The Chinese will find a way to get the news from the outside world.

I called and asked them how to put Brietbart on. I had to spell it for the rep; he never heard of it. He said I couldn't add any sources, so I deleted the app.

You are right, they probably had little choice.
I now one hardware company which would have lost hundreds of millions of dollars in business if they did not bow to China’s demands.
I hated dealing and negotiating with anyone in that country
