Folders return to Windows 10's Start Thing (Coming in "Creators Update")
The Register ^ | Dec 30, 2016 | Andrew Orlowski

Posted on 12/31/2016 9:20:24 AM PST by dayglored

Because it’s not complicated enough already, Windows 10’s Start menu will support folders in a forthcoming release.

The Windows 10 Redstone 2 release, also dubbed the “Creators Update”, will allow apps to be nested, much as with Windows Phone 8, and the mobile edition of Windows 10. The update is expected around April, and aggregates work since the Anniversary Update in early August. Around a dozen builds have been released via the Insider Preview program since the official announcement in October.

The folders appear in an unofficial leaked build (14997) and MS Power User blog has a nice GIF of them in action, here.

The leaked build also showcases new tab behaviour in the Edge browser, and a system wide night mode, which reduces the blue light emitted by the display.

It’s a mystery why Microsoft deemed Start screen folders acceptable for mobile users, but not desktop users.

Windows 10’s current Start menu/screen thing is a complex hybrid of the Windows 8 start screen and the Windows XP/7 menu.

Like the sex organs of the duck, it's an inexplicable evolutionary artefact.

A Thing.

One almost has to be a programmer just to install software and updates.

Oh brother!

“”On a personal note, I just do not like thew new Win10 menu structure. I know it’s customizable, but it’s a new configuration item to manage. As I see it, the menu has too many hidden things that pop up and I don’t really care about the latest news feed (for example, G. Michael in your gif). I don’t want variable things in my menu structure; I want it stable and consistent!””

Amen!!! Who on earth are the people they test these changes on? Can we prevent this from happening or do we all have to uninstall 10 and go back to 7?

“”If the function can fulfill the need then it is a success. Once an older person learns an OS they most likely have no purpose in upgrading to anything else as their need is being met.””

I think the view of the person putting up the most defense of Windows 10 changes thinks people only under the age of 50 or 60 should be using computers. There is a large % of us, just counting here on FR who have been retired for many years and have no need for the bells and whistles. Our computers are for our enjoyment and convenience not for causing us frustration day in and day out because MS can’t leave things alone.

And oh! yes - for our grandchildren to enjoy! They don’t give a hoot for MS and their changes!

“”Some “old” people need to get that tech doesn’t freeze when they stop caring. Nor is productivity only defined to the point where they just don’t feel like learning anything new.””

Good grief! Now you sound like a progressive. What are you doing on FR? Because we OLD PEOPLE don’t think the same as you do, we need to “”blah blah blah””??? I think you can trust us OLD PEOPLE to say whether we want our OS to change or not and know what we are talking about.

> . Are you really unable to adjust or is this just a “get off my lawn and PC” moment?

There's a third possibility. I use computers as tools. To me, there should be no need to "adjust" to a new user interface, any more than there is any need to "adjust" to a new design of hammer or power drill. If Black & Decker comes out with a power drill that I have to hold using both hands and activate with my tongue, I'm not going to like it. And if I am forced to use it, I'm going to complain that it's not an improvement.

Microsoft's recent user interface changes are pure marketing cr@p in terms of productivity and utility. They do, on the other hand, well serve their intended function of selling more stuff to the users.

“Good grief! Now you sound like a progressive.

Progressives are people that sit around complaining about how someone else is oppressing them and how things need to be rigged so that that nothing ever offends them.

In short, the vast majority of the serial complainers on Windows threads.

“What are you doing on FR? Because we OLD PEOPLE don’t think the same as you do, we need to “”blah blah blah””???”

Last time I checked FR wasn’t a retirement community.

” I think you can trust us OLD PEOPLE to say whether we want our OS to change or not and know what we are talking about.”

Not honestly because most of you would freeze out anything that is newer than what you care to ever learn.

“So tell ya what. Next year you’re going to be forced to buy a new car, and the steering wheel is replaced by a joystick, and the driver sits in the passenger seat. “

They aren’t “forced” to buy anything.

They just demand that if you ever have to use anything newer than what you are used to, that it must be a 100% the same or else they will hold your breath and cry until someone makes it the same.

Essentially they think that tech is something that ought to freeze and never advance...even though everything you use is the result of just that!

“Geez, gimme a freakin’ break. A computer is a tool. Changing the fundamentals of how a tool works, simply so that it can be called “NEW”, is bullshite marketing. “

PCs aren’t like a flat-head screwdrivers or a saw where the blade is never the part you hold nor the handle the part you saw with. That is why you have all of the goodies you use today because people dont listen to people that demand NOTHING changes.

No “fundamentals” changed all that much than when it changed from Win 3.11 and 95, or 98 to XP....when the previous generation of complainers swore THOSE changes were all “marketing” and useless.

Wonder whatever happened to those people?

And whatever you swear by today is nothing like it looked when it was first developed. So back then there was some dude screeching that Windows(x) just ruined their lives because some thing isnt where it used to be.

“In my work with Win10 for the past 2 years, I have found nothing that the Metro/Win8/Win10 tiled start page does, that is USEFUL and PRODUCTIVE”

I do. That is why people can get an old OS copy without that “confusing” and “useless” new stuff, and stay stuck where things wont bother them.

I recall how back when you could put shortcuts in your taskbar, the howls of indignation about that too! Today it’s a standard feature, and no one has any idea how that was never not there.

Just these guys need to stay there and not get all salty when they wake up and find out that most people are perfectly used to the “impossible to use” OS, and whatever old version you are using no longer has any support or updates.

“I think the view of the person putting up the most defense of Windows 10 changes thinks people only under the age of 50 or 60 should be using computers. “

No. It’s that people younger than you would rather not be saddled with the equivalent of a 1998 flip phone manufactured in 2017, because these older people want
“new” but it better not have anything they aren’t used to or else they will carp and complain until your ears fall off.

“old” PC users can be as locked to their older OSs and software all they want, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of new development because they think they are so special that the tech universe ought to revolve around their desire to stay put.

No tech company in their right minds does that.

Boy! You could do yourself and others a favor and stop dispensing the advice and do a little research on the meaning of words.. All you need to know about progressives is right here and strange but I don’t see anything about progressives sitting around complaining about how someone else is oppressing them etc.

http://www.dictionary.com/browse/progressive

“”Not honestly because most of you would freeze out anything that is newer than what you care to ever learn.””

Are you serious? “MOST OF YOU”??? Is it up to you to make that determination about anyone posting on FR? WOW - what a way to start a new year..

Wouldn’t you be more comfortable talking to obozo and Hillary and their crowd?

Does FR give out trophies at the end of a year for foolishness?

Do yourself a favor and stop judging something you know nothing about. Myself and others my age do not complain about wanting NEW whatevers. Believe it or not, we are quite content to get along with what we have. Maybe it’s something that would do you some good.

Most of us have cell phones that never leave our purses and are there simply for emergencies and not for talking to our neighbor who is probably loading groceries in her car in the parking lot next to our car. What business is it of yours what other people prefer?

At our ages we sit in doctor’s offices and wait for our own appointments or our spouse’s and believe it or not, we read. ACTUAL BOOKS in our hands - not cell phones or tablets!

Prefer what you want, dude. I dont care if you use one of these Jitterbug phones.

That’s nice. So what? Because tablets and smartphones are evil or something?

well here’s some laptop links from an earlier post i made:

http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/latitude-e5570-laptop/pd

http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/latitude-e5470-laptop/pd

weirdly enough, the 15” ones are less expensive than the 14” inch ones right now.

these are fine laptops, btw. I’ve bought several for clients.

i5 CPU is more than most people need. real speed comes from the HD; 7200rpm minimum rpm; .5-1GTB size; buy a samsung evo 850 .5TB SSD and clone the dell one onto that and then put the SSD into the laptop.

4GB is good. if you need more, buy samsung memory sticks off of amazon and put them in yourself.

[[i5 CPU is more than most people need.]]

I do a lot of heavy graphics work- photo post work, artwork, drawing, painting, and especially watercolor on the computer which is really cpu intensive because of hte massive calculations it has to do to ‘mix’ the colors and spread the paint i guess-

I need something i can lay flat to work on without a keyboard getting in the way- like a tablet- and something that works with a wacom stylus or some sort of stylus- Wacom being one of the best really- I have a wacom tablet that is hardwire only- not portable- but i need something portable- something i can draw and paint on-

FYI, I use computers as tools also - for coding, database development, server and web site management, photo(shop) editing, etc. Thus far I am having no problems or use issues with this latest version of the tool. YMMV
