Folders return to Windows 10's Start Thing (Coming in "Creators Update")
The Register ^ | Dec 30, 2016 | Andrew Orlowski

Posted on 12/31/2016 9:20:24 AM PST by dayglored

Because it’s not complicated enough already, Windows 10’s Start menu will support folders in a forthcoming release.

The Windows 10 Redstone 2 release, also dubbed the “Creators Update”, will allow apps to be nested, much as with Windows Phone 8, and the mobile edition of Windows 10. The update is expected around April, and aggregates work since the Anniversary Update in early August. Around a dozen builds have been released via the Insider Preview program since the official announcement in October.

The folders appear in an unofficial leaked build (14997) and MS Power User blog has a nice GIF of them in action, here.

The leaked build also showcases new tab behaviour in the Edge browser, and a system wide night mode, which reduces the blue light emitted by the display.

It’s a mystery why Microsoft deemed Start screen folders acceptable for mobile users, but not desktop users.

Windows 10’s current Start menu/screen thing is a complex hybrid of the Windows 8 start screen and the Windows XP/7 menu.

Like the sex organs of the duck, it's an inexplicable evolutionary artefact.

A Thing.

you’re welcome- Sorry that the resident insulter, vandkoink- felt the obsessive need to belittle you for having a personal preference that doesn’t jive with his self perceived ‘superior’ personal preference- seems some people aren’t happy unless they are tearing into other people- Apparently they think it makes them look more important, or smarter or something- too bad they didn’t learn good manners when growing up-

FR is populated overwhelmingly by great people. The few misanthropes aren’t worthy of attention. Thanks again.

You dont like my “belittling”, but you should try reading EVERY Ms thread where a bunch of 60 year olds basically brag about how clueless they are like it is almost virtue signaling or spinning goofy yarns about how anything on a PC that isnt exactly the same as it was in 19xx is “forcing” you to do XY or Z.

There is nothing of value on 99% of these posts. Just old guy number one that cant figure anything out because they spent 10 minutes on it, and then Linux evangelist pimping out “Linux Mint” to people that have no idea how to navigate a start menu!

Frankly the “clowns” show up in the first 10 posts.

Heaven forbid someone tell you guys how absurd you sound.

Were you a campaign manager for Hillary? Because you have the same attitude as one.

[[Do you know of a reputable source for an ISO that has the updates “slip-streamed” in? Even just through mid-2016 would be a blessing. Thanks!]]

Whoops- forgot to respond to this question- No unfortunately I don’t know of any- If you ever run across one, please ping me too- that woudl be fantastic- I just go about it the hard way- days of updates, struggling with the KB requirements before the updates will work etc- then make a macrium reflect snapshot and create the .iso from there (although I’ve yet to create it though- lol I’ll probably crash before getting around ot creating the snapshot-

I’m running Windows 7. It started running sluggishly (50% cpu when nothing going on). I considered converting to Windows 10, read it’s benefits, and decided I wouldn’t gain anything I need.

I solved my degradation problem as I’ve done before, by restoring my entire system from an Acronis backup.

I’m not confident that an upgrade to Windows would have eliminated the degradation because I imagine it’s because of registry entries, or polluted programs starting.

I have looked for ways of eliminating this stuff. Once I had a company take control of my computer for a couple of hours and they cleaned it up. Cost about $100. I’m not doing that again — too expensive.

Since there are services that can clean up my computer, why can’t I find information on what they do? There are secrets that are intentionally being withheld from us.

As someone who’s used most everything from Windows 1 up through NT, XP, Server X, 7, 8 and now 10; I am not having any problems with 10. Like change in life, it just takes a little getting used to it. Are you really unable to adjust or is this just a “get off my lawn and PC” moment?

[[Frankly the “clowns” show up in the first 10 posts.]]

No sir you are the clown- and the only one sounding absurd here is you, with your constant rude belittling of others that have different preferences than you do, apparently in a misguided effort to make yerself feel better about yerself- As I said- it’s old, it’s tiresome, childish, and just plain rude- and nothing you say is going to make it not so- It’s not that people can’t figure it out- it’s that we Do NOT like it- Capiche? - it’s not that people don’t accept change- it’s that we do Not like Crappy change just for the sake of change-Your argument is ignorant, and ignores the facts- all in an effort to belittle others as ‘ignorant or lazy’- Capiche? have a nice day-

There is no "horrible" experience. Just really lazy old people that love to bitch and moan.

A person that cries about "flip floppity things" really is beyond help.

LOL!! Looks like the bi-weekly Windoze for Luddites thread is getting to you :P.

LOL! Are you kidding?

You guys sound like SJWs that desperately need a “safe space” when it comes to tech.

MS adds a simple folders option, and you guys go into meltdown mode needing to scream about how you are being “oppressed” or how your ancient computer set-up makes you special snowflakes requiring MS to lock their OS to some ancient version so you dont become triggered by having to actually learn something new.

I’m fully expect some of you to start barking about how your preferred pronoun is now XP or “mint” any day now.

I’ve never understood the mentality of MS Certified IT types. Constant harangue about how stupid users are, but their very livelihoods depend upon it. You’d think they didn’t understand this dichotomy, but then comes the Apple hatred, so they do understand their dependence upon users making a botch of things for them to “fix.” They’re not demigods in Apple shops, and this drives them berserk.

Sound like anybody you know, lol?

listen- we’ve all been through many windows changes- and have adjusted- but it’s the crappy changes in the recent windows 8 and windows 10 that we object to- many many people objected to windows 8 menu- that is why windows 10 tried to give back some control over the menu- but they didn’t go far enough in many people’s opinion- if we’re all just supposed to accept every change and not object- then I guess no one had a right to complain about the last 8 years of the socialist in power- nor were we supposed to vote for change back to the way things were before he took power?

Some changes are fine- some changes however, are crappy enough that people would rather not ‘adjust’-

You don’t mind the changes- That’s fine, that’s you opinion about the changes- many however do and that is why programs like classic shell were created- to combat crappy changes- The opinions of Those who object are no less valid than your opinion-

So since “Windoze” is so crappy and unworkable, why haven’t you people just download that magical Linux distro that supposedly will be a magic cure all or go the the Goodwill and buy a Pentium II with XP on it and STOP taking up every damn Windows post with your bitching and moaning!

MS isnt going to re-release XP or 95 because you cant do much more than complain and flail around with anything made after 2010.

Either fix your damn problems or LIVE WITH IT. Capiche?

This is basically what you all sound like on EVERY Windows thread:

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! MS changed something!!!! I hate them! Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Why cant they just leave it like it was in 2001?!?!? Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

I’M GOING TO USE LINUX MINT! WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

It’s the tech equivalent of threatening to move to Canada, but then DOING NOTHING.

You just like to hear yourselves complain, while those of us that actually can learn and adapt with current tech? Hell just get pinged to a story to just read a bunch of crybabies recycle the same comments from the last 30 posts!

Interesting, I look forward to the update. Having used every iteration of Windows, Windows 10 is my favorite, it works GREAT. That said, I would not want it on an older (Windows 7 or earlier) computer.

And yes, I have tried all sorts of Linux distros, including compiling my own, but eventually I come back to Windows, it just works for me.

The Hackintosh I have is pretty cool, but again, I just need something that works. Whatever works for me, at that moment, is fine!

For all those who want to hold onto their old versions of Windows for as long as possible, I say go for it. That's your choice, although you'll eventually run into cyber, support and compatibility problems with newer devices and hardware if you ever upgrade. Freedom of choice is a wonderful thing.

That being said, I personally like Windows 10. Just my opinion though, which is apparently shared by very few who post to these periodic Windows bashing threads. There were a few things about Windows 8 I didn't like, but Win10 fixed most of them.

I like and use various Linux distros as well, but still use Win10 at home most of the time. Among other things, I play lots of PC-based games, and Linux just unfortunately isn't an option for those. And I still have to use Win7 at work, which is dictated by our corporate IT folks, but the company switch to Win10 is fortunately underway and will be completed in 2017.

It’s a sort of cold war, between users who just want to remain productive and only want “change” that’s a demonstrated benefit or improvement, versus MS and allied software companies, developers and IT techs who want to keep selling their “stuff.” Complexity rewards them all, but penalizes users who merely want to continue using a productivity tool in the most productive manner.

Are you really young or something? Seriously- Your responses are very childish- you over exaggerate your accusations, falsely claiming things we never said or believe- and over generalize you accusations like a typical child would do to try to ‘win’ an argument- in order to make your ignorant berating arguments- and yes, that is just what a child does- Exaggerates in an effort to salt their argument to make it sound more convincing- more ‘authentic’- guess what? It doesn’t- it only erodes your argument further- but if you don’t mind appearing like you do- that’s your problem, not ours-

Which is why Virtualization tools like VMWare Workstation and VMWare Player should be considered as good options to those who need to keep older/legacy versions of Windows or Linux around. I have Windows XP VM's for some legacy amateur radio software that requires it. Works well and since I don't need internet connectivity for the software that runs in the VM I simply "disconnect" the ethernet interface in the VMWare Settings for that VM and I don't have to worry about viruses, malware or other issues.
