A naval program that has become a target for critics is preparing to commission a new vessel named after a well-known shooting survivor.
Constructed by Austal USA in Mobile, Alabama, the USS Gabrielle Giffords has completed testing in the Gulf of Mexico and is scheduled to be commissioned in mid-2017. The company handed over the $475 million ship to the Navy on Friday.

And yes, Retain Mike - ANY MoH recipient would be better than Giffords.
Chris Kyle just came immediately to my mind.
You said it for me. Absolutely great pick!
Well, I wouldn’t wish that on her.
But I sure as Hell don’t want her being honored with a US Navy ship named after her.
Maybe if she’d actually DONE something - like a cop or a fightfighter running into the World Trade Center to save someone, it would be a different story.
This is just PC bullsh*t because she was shot.
There is often some logic to the naming of US Navy ships, in the case of these LCSs they are all named after medium sized US cities, i.e., Coronodo, Jackson, Montgomery, Omoha, Fort Worth, Milwaukee, Detroit, Little Rock, etc.
Except for one: USS Giffords is named after a Dem politician, from Arizona's 8th district, which includes parts of Phoenix.
The last USS Phoenix (SSN 702) was decommissioned in 1998, so that name is available, or perhaps Peoria near Phoenix would also serve.
At least until the next planned USS Phoenix is commissioned in 2422:
You are right on that one; DDG-12.
