How a Trump administration could shape the internet

Under a President Donald Trump, cable and phone companies could gain new power to influence what you do and what you watch online — not to mention how much privacy you have while you’re at it.

Republicans who generally oppose regulation seem likely to take charge at the Federal Communications Commission, the government’s primary telecom regulator. That alone could mean the end of rules designed to protect privacy and individual choice on the internet. Those rules were enacted over the past several years under the Obama administration.

Under Trump, “the FCC will be a lot more focused on getting government out of the way,” said Berin Szoka, president of TechFreedom, a think tank that opposes much regulation. Phone and cable companies routinely protest that regulation lead them to invest less in their networks, harming their ability to deliver better service. …

The article is interesting -- they complain that Trump may roll back the power of the FCC, and then complain that the FCC may abuse it's power to penalize Trump's critics.

I'm guessing the author doesn't recognize the irony.

IS IT TOO LATE TO STOP HANDING CONTROL OF THE INTERNET OVER TO SOMEONE ELSE?

(I mean who in the right mind thinks THAT was a good idea??? Has the USA done a bad job or something? Private growth of the Internet is a supreme example of the success of NOT having government control)

FYI, if you are worried about privacy on the 'Net, use a VPN. They are widely available now, and can be used on your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop.

You can even choose a VPN endpoint (where your traffic enters and exits the public Internet) in another country, putting it out of the reach of anyone in the US.

I use one when I'm traveling internationally to make it appear I'm in the US. It avoids problems with Internet banking, who may lock your account if you access it from outside the US. And no, telling them you are traveling doesn't help -- it happened to me despite notice. The notice only applies to financial transactions.

I've also set one up into my house, so it makes it appear I'm at home. That gives me full access to everything available on my DVR.

Not left to their own devices. Trump is going to have to start inflicting pain on their corporate parents to get any sort of positive change to happen.

Classic doublethink; broaching two contradictory points of view and presenting them both as true.

So now the Asspress asswipes care about privacy? They didn’t care about any of it including IRS abuses up until now.

Somehow they manage to argue that Trump would do the opposite. Stop would stop the Democrats at the FCC from turning it into a utility so they can regulate our freedom of speech.

It is leftist BS that the biggest threat to freedom of speech somehow are the companies that provide broadband. There hasn't been a problem for, oh, the last 30 years since people have been expressing themselves on the net, but they want to believe internet companies are just around the corner ready to curtail our speech.

It is meant to distract from he real bully, government.

It’s a redux of Woodrow Wilson’s “corporations” bogeyman. Wilson expounded on this in his 1887 screed Socialism and Democracy:
“Corporations grow on every hand, and on every hand not only swallow and overawe individuals but also compete with governments. The contest is no longer between government and individuals; it is now between government and dangerous combinations and individuals. Here is a monstrously changed aspect of the social world. In face of such circumstances, must not government lay aside all timid scruple and boldly make itself an agency for social reform as well as for political control? ‘Yes,’ says the democrat, ‘perhaps it must.’” …
Not unlike any other socialist. (And I wonder if he meant to write “democrat” with a big D sometimes.)
