You can even choose a VPN endpoint (where your traffic enters and exits the public Internet) in another country, putting it out of the reach of anyone in the US.
I use one when I'm traveling internationally to make it appear I'm in the US. It avoids problems with Internet banking, who may lock your account if you access it from outside the US. And no, telling them you are traveling doesn't help -- it happened to me despite notice. The notice only applies to financial transactions.
I've also set one up into my house, so it makes it appear I'm at home. That gives me full access to everything available on my DVR.
One can use the browser Opera, it has built in VPN.
