The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force on Sunday issued new guidance for the use of cholesterol-busting statin drugs. The report greatly expands the universe of people who should be screened to see if they need the medication to everyone over age 40 regardless of whether they have a history of cardiovascular disease.
The recommendations also support the position of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, which in 2013 radically shifted their advice from suggesting that doctors focus on the level of a patients low-density lipoproteins (LDL) or bad cholesterol to looking at a more comprehensive picture of risk based on things such as weight and blood pressure, as well as lifestyle factors.
People with no signs, symptoms, or history of cardiovascular disease can still be at risk for having a heart attack or stroke, said Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, who chairs the task force.
[Could these new cholesterol drugs save many people from heart attacks?]
The task force, which is made up of independent experts but commissioned by the government, concurred after a comprehensive review of the evidence on the topic determined that a broader evaluation of risk is needed. But it puts a greater emphasis on age than the ACC and AHA did in determining who might benefit from the medication in preventing heart attack or stroke. It is also slightly more conservative when it comes to determining the benefits of taking the medications, which include Lipitor, Crestor and Zocor.
The new guidelines, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, suggests that people ages 40 to 75 who have one or more risk factors such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes or smoking that put them at a 10 percent or greater risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next

“There are many many youtubes if him explaining why statin is poison”
It is hard for me to reconcile that claim with my mother’s experience with statins: She is 99, relatively healthy, and has been taking statins for something like 27 years. Same here, for that matter.
Off your meds again, eh?

Have you ever tried just eating hot peppers?
The juice of a hot pepper under the tongue will instantly stop a heart attack.
The loss of Co-Q10 from statin use will cause heart failure.
After being a statistician in testing for the last job of my career, I now look at studies in a whole different way. I now wonder about blood type chemistry as related to side effects regarding statins. Some people I’ve personally known take enormous doses of statins with no problems or side effects and others like myself have problems with a very small dosage. Clearly there is a problem for many of us, a blanket statement that anyone over 40 should be on statins certainly isn’t science.

Well, the article does not say that. It says statin therapy should be considered, based on a multi-factoral approach.
But we clearly over treated many folks back when we were treating total cholesterol. I spent years taking folks off statins. We are probably doing it again now we know LDL isn’t actually the risk factor but particles are.

Real knowledge is a fabulous thing.
Of course it doesn’t, but look where we’re at years later. Doctors have been “considering” this on us for decades despite known severe and debilitating side effects. I had a VA cardio doctor all but wipe his behind with my CT heartsaver scan (calcification test) and need I even have to say what I think of his superior critical thinking skills.
I’m with ya on those real foods thing you mentioned, I love them all, and indulge. My BP just measured is 124 over 75 with a heart rate of 64. Best of both worlds, and I’m full of beer. Mother was nuts for that Weight Watchers crap, and I’d bet that stuff played a role in her early exit @ 66 YO. She also smoked...
Oh, forgot, also take Atorvastatin and 6 more scripts. We’ll see...
