MONDAY, Nov. 14, 2016 -- Spanking and hitting children to discipline them has been on the decline among U.S. parents -- rich and poor alike -- since 1988, a new study finds.
According to the researchers, the number of mothers with an average income level who considered physical discipline acceptable decreased from 46 percent to 21 percent over two decades.
At the same time, mothers who felt timeouts were a better type of discipline rose from 51 percent to 71 percent, the investigators found.
"Parents seem to be using more reasoning and nonphysical discipline strategies with children, which is in line with what the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended in 1998," said lead researcher Rebecca Ryan. She's an associate professor of psychology at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
"At all income and education levels, parents' attitudes toward physical punishment have changed over the last 20 years and, very likely, their behavior with their children," she said.
For the study, Ryan and her colleagues reviewed four national studies of kindergarten-age children -- about 5 years old. The studies were conducted between 1988 and 2011.

Dr. Heidi Feldman..said..It is very good news that over the last 30 to 40 years, the percentage of parents endorsing physical discipline has declined while the percentage of parents reporting nonphysical discipline increased."
That’s why we have so many selfish brats running around lose and they’re 30 years old. Pathetic waste of oxygen.
Started with Dr. Spock, and he was before MY time.
Q. Why am I not a snowflake?
A. Nuns with rulers.
Ungrateful snots as I like to refer to them as.
“loose” Sorry to all the grammarians I offended by my typo.
As a father I never spanked my kids, neither did my wife. ‘They are the best behaved kids I know. Probably because Dad is an Alpha dad, and you simply didn’t want to push him that far.
And we have how many kids on drugs for ADHD?
Which accounts for my Wife’s inability to instill any classroom discipline.
I would assume that a lot of children these days are instructed to never tell a social worker about spankings. Nothing positive ever comes from that. Probably skews the data in this study.
And it shows.
It shows.
What a waste.
Expect them to STILL try to criminalize corporal parental punishment. Then they’ll remove the children from these homes to be given to homosexuals to raise.
They give the “faces of meth” page some pretty good competition.
The problem is that today’s screaming kids have become screaming adults because no one ever told them no while they were growing up - so now they want . . . Want . . . WANT everything to go their own way. The literally want a ‘do over’ in the national election. In fact, in their immature minds they want some kind of co-presidency with Hillary being the boss and Trump being a president with Mike Pence authority.
Waah Waah Waah!
Sounds like they seek a mother image they never had as a child. Deep seated mental ills. Many infeminant men.
