Russia is ditching Microsoft because it's an easy target (Putin says "Nyet!" to Windows)

Anything to make the US seem like a boogeyman.

We know that Russia wants to give Microsoft products the boot, but now it's clearer as to why. A senior US intelligence official talking to NBC News not only supports talk of Russia endorsing a plan to purge Microsoft software from the government (starting with Moscow), but explains why. Reportedly, Vladimir Putin and crew are picking on Microsoft because it's an easy target for anti-American sentiment. It's a huge company that rules the tech sector, and it's not hard to persuade Russians that the firm is collaborating with US spies despite evidence to the contrary.

For its part, Microsoft maintains that it doesn't work with "any government" on surveillance, or conduct any espionage itself. Its soon-to-be-acquired job site, LinkedIn, is currently fighting a Russian attempt to block access.

I would think they would come up with their own version of Linux. That way they can put in their own spyware. In Russia government watches you.

That's true. Same for Windows 10. :-)

Or a new kernel for a whole new OS.
Seems like it ought to be worth it with the changes since the old oses came out.
Make it a “national project” for the universities.

Also wish a government would sponsor a non-commercial search engine. I’d rather be spied on than mis-directed.

Microsoft sucks. Any government that uses it is open to backdoor traps and hacking

Windows just has too many holes to be safe, especially for a foreign government. If they go open source, they can inspect every line of code for mischief, so the biggest danger becomes the hardware.

Right you are.
Microsoft Redmond’s daily user data ex-filtration has been such a concern, its one of the reasons why Enterprise IT departments held off “upgrading” to Window’s 10.

From Chief Security Officer publication:

http://www.csoonline.com/article/3136652/windows/the-paranoid-user-s-guide-to-windows-10-privacy.html

Microsoft is disgusting.

Glad is no fool. Why should he use an OS on his government’s computers that logs every keystroke and sends them to Redmond, Washington?

It’s the same reason that I’ll never upgrade to Windows 10.

Given all the Snowden revelations, the only question is why did they wait so long?

Windows is so full of holes you can use it to strain spaghetti!

Probably Linux or UNIX, since they're free these days. Apple MacOS is "free" but only runs on Apple hardware (legally) whereas Linux/Unix run on just about anything.
