Apple today released the second official update to the iOS 10 operating system, nearly one month after releasing iOS 10.0.2 and a month and a half after providing the new iOS 10 operating system to the public. iOS 10.0.3 comes ahead of iOS 10.1, a more significant update that brings a Portrait mode depth-of-field effect to the iPhone 7 Plus.

iOS 10.0.3 can be downloaded as an over-the-air update on all iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus devices.

10-0-3
Today's update includes a fix for a bug that could cause issues with cellular connectivity, a problem that only affected the new iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. Shortly after the iPhone 7 was released, a number of Verizon users began experiencing a serious issue that caused them to regularly lose LTE connectivity on their new device. It was later discovered that the issue affected iPhone 7 and 7 Plus devices associated with other carriers as well, and it should now be fixed for all users.

iOS 10 is a major update that includes features like a redesigned Lock screen experience, a revamped Messages app with a full App Store, a Siri SDK for developers, new looks and features for Maps and Apple Music, and tons more. Make sure to check out our iOS 10 roundup for details.

will if fix the horrible battery life that changed with the last software release. It cut the battery life in half and I lose 20% per hour. Apple store wanted me to do a complete wipe of the phone but I was concerned about having to restore it and to get all my data back after erasing it.

Has anybody noticed a problem with battery life after the last software update. My battery goes down 20% per hour and its a serious problem. Does this new update address Battery life?

I went to an apple store and they wanted me to reset my phone going back to original settings but I didn’t allow them do that as I didn’t have my backup complete.

What is the best way to delete and restore if I decided to go forward.

Ok - here is an off-topic question. We recently bought my son a used (cheap!) iPhone 4S. My understanding is that due to the hardware, 9.3.5 is the highest OS that this phone will accept.

It’s unlocked with no carrier. We bought it so that he can call 911 if need be. He mostly uses it to play games and check mail when he can get a wifi signal.

So the question is - do we need to be concerned about NOT having the latest iOS? I’m a PC guy, and don’t know much about Apple products (but I’m learning 8^)

Reading around, it seems that the answer is NO - as alot of folks don’t upgrade for some time. I’m just curious to see what the opinion is here at FR.

The iPhone 4s is nowhere nearly as secure a phone as anything made after the iPhone 5s and later. The 4s simply lacks the hardware. The iPhone 4s will most likely be "End of Support Life" at the end of September in 2017 (five years after it was introduced on September 12, 2012) and that means it will receive no further security updates. The iPhone 4s cannot be updated beyond iOS 9.x. iOS 10 does not support the iPhone 4s at all and will not load on it.

However, for all practical purposes, it has already reached that end of support life point as the updates that are coming out now are very few and far between as there are very few users out there. The problem is that very few app makers are developing for the iPhone 4s and iOS 9 anymore. . . all development and updates are targeted to iOS 10 and your son's phone is going to be left behind as his games slowly stop working if he updates them and they are need hardware or OS functions the phone doesn't have.

The apps he has will continue to work, but if they're updated, they may not. I suggest you turn off auto-update on apps if it is on.

The unlocked from original iPhone 4s has a hardware block for the CDMA signal, even though the phone itself is capable of a CDMA signal.

Finally, I gather you are basically going to use it as an iPod Touch through WIFI and not activate the cellular capabilities for your son. The 911 function will still work regardless. That should be no problem for security. . . iOS is inherently more secure than Android phones, even if not updated. Your son does not use it to access banking or other financial data over WIFI, I would imagine, so I would not worry using iOS 9.3.5.

At the time that iOS 10 was released, 92% of iPhone users were on iOS 9.3.5. Now, 88% have updated to iOS 10 or higher just a month after it was released.

No problem here. My new iPhone 7 Plus (iOS 10.0.2) usually finishes the day with 80% battery left after using it all day. My previous iPhone 6s did have a short term battery problem after downloading and install of iOS 10 but that went away after a forced restart (hold down home and power buttons for ten seconds until the iPhone goes dead, then press the power button to turn it back on), the issue went away.

Connect your iPhone to your computer through iTunes, do a full sync, copy any photos, then do a restore to factory, re-sync from your computer to the iPhone. Everything should be just as it was.

Wow - great info.

Yep, this is basically his “training wheels” iphone. If he can demonstrate that he can take care of this, we’ll consider helping him get a better phone - in a couple of years.

Thanks so much.
