A Radical Idea: Four City-Dwellers Share All Their Money
The Atlantic ^ | September 22, 2016 | Gillian B. White

This unassuming house on a quiet street in Northeast D.C. is cramped but welcoming. There are several bikes lined up on the porch, overflowing bookshelves, personal belongings in almost every corner, and a refrigerator that’s packed to the hilt. When I visit, four people are in the living room chatting and joking with each other like friends who have known each other for years. But they haven’t. The group has known each other for only a year or so, and they aren’t merely friends—they are engaged in a bold and unusual experiment, sharing not just their home but all of their income too.

It always works the same way no matter the situation. The weakest link benefits to the detriment of the strongest.

Exactly the script from the 70s. I was there, but not at Bernie’s. It’s factual. ALL the communes devolved in the same way. There was always someone with their own money or a university or medical job who paid the bills, too. They also got no respect.

If they are truly committed to a cenobitic lifestyle and have all embraced a vow of poverty with equal ardor they might make a go of it. Short of that, this little experiment falls under the classic definition of insanity, repeating the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I don’t know, man. On the premier showing of Survivor last night, rather than help build shelter in the face of an oncoming typhoon, one guy spent the time out looking for an immunity idol for himself. And they voted off some broad.

If that’s what these free individuals want to do - fine with me. They can make it work, or not, on their own terms.

The problem, of course, with Leftists is they are, at heart, tyrants and fascists, and they often view it as some kind of ideal for society, and especially something that can or should be imposed on others by government force.

And... I'd argue that it's not even 100% with families.

Would I help out my weird Uncle Harold with the rent for a month or two, because he got laid off? Probably. Actually, no "probably" about it, I've done exactly that, and would do it again without any reservation.

But would I help him out to my own kids' detriment? Or, if "a month or two" turns into "six or eight"? Or, if he decided to go back to college for "a couple of years, only four at the most..."? Probably not so much, especially if he was 100% able-bodied and available to support himself.

Do the same for three strangers? Forget it.

Jenny brings in most of the money.Do the guys help out cleaning, cooking or fixing stuff around the house?? Then I would say it evens out..If they sit on their assets all day and Jenny brings in the money AND DOES most of the work, then she is a what bugs bunny called ,a maroon....

If they want to form their own little communes, that’s their business. But when they try to force sharing on all of us through legislation we have a problem.

Even in Isreal, where socialism was popular, the kibbutzim have declined precipitously, although there is a recent resurgence. People forget the lessons that communes don’t work.

Human nature will soon make their little childish liberal (I know I repeat myself) fantasy another delusional failure.

At least when it’s voluntary, they only hurt themselves.

Capitalism is successful to the degree it accepts human nature and puts it to use. Socialism thinks human nature is malleable and tries unsuccessfully to beat the square peg into a round hole. When that fails, rather than abandon their conceit, the cacophony resumes with, “This time it’s different.”

Not even. A tribe has a chief and rules that punish and reward certain behaviors. This is more like “to each according to their needs, from each according to their ability”.

“The appeal of socialism is that it seems a benevolent form of government, where everyone works to help his fellow citizens.

But, as the Puritans discovered, socialism denies man’s innate incentive to work hard for his own family, not his neighbors. Capitalism, while not perfect, gives man the incentive he needs to work hard for his family and thereby help his entire community—not by force, but out of true generosity.

If America fails to learn from the mistakes of our ancestors, we’ll have forgotten the truth of Albert Einstein’s famous aphorism: “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
