Florida Walmart’s 9/11 Coke Display Sparks Outrage
KFOR ^ | SEPTEMBER 8, 2016 | NADIA JUDITH ENCHASSI

People are furious after pictures of a Florida Walmart's 9/11-themed Coke display began to circulate on Twitter Tuesday afternoon.

Twitter user Shawn Richard tweeted a picture of the display, which presented Coke Zero in place of Ground Zero and spurred thousands of angry retweets about the beverage company's marketing ploy.

“We stopped and stared at it, like oh my God,” Richard said, according to BuzzFeed News. “Nobody seemed to be noticing it. It wasn’t very crowded, and I got the feeling that it had just been assembled. So, we took some pics and went on our way.”

Orlando Weekly reports the display has been taken down and Walmart initially approved the design.

In less than two days, the post has more than 2,500 retweets and 4,100 likes.

I have mixed opinions on this and a couple other related stories. On one hand, it's sad to see a commercialization of 9/11. On the other, it doesn't seem bad to see different forms of expression towards commemorating it.

I told my wife, that I can now better see the point of those that always complain that Memorial Day with its barbeques, parades, etc is inappropriate.

One thing I'm certainly tired of though, is the constant outrage whenever somebody sees something they don't like.

I’m looking at the display, and I find myself distinctly not outraged.

Agreed. However, this TV commercial is in really poor taste.

Not much in the quoted statements about why the people were offended. I find nothing offensive about it. It’s nice someone remembers.

Are corporations not permitted to commemorate historical events? There is more than a little disrespect for business in this phony outrage.

I’ve got mixed feelings about that display.

Although I disagree with commercializing the commemoration of 9/11, I’m not offended by Coca Cola’s patriotic observance of the date.

I do not consider images of the twin towers offensive.
I thought the display was nicely done and symbolizes patriotism and remembrance.
One could argue it might be in bad taste to use a terror attack to sell a product but it does not warrant outrage.
I don't want to emulate the histrionics from Leftists and Muslims.

I think that display is right patriotic . . . unlike the mattress commercial.

‘Coke Zero’. Yep, that’s the ‘New New Coke’ idea — not on steroids, more like mega-doses of leftist estrogen.

Pepsi tastes just a little better.

No, I don’t believe a corporation should use 9/11 to sell Coke. And since I was an eye witness to 9/11 I don’t buy into this phony outrage some of you are claiming to witness.

Good display? Helps people remember? I might back my insult.

But I hope this particular sale goes to a very patriotic charity. Such as wounded veterans or something. Shouldn’t cash in on something like this.

I get the sentiment, but many Americans don’t want to see ANY visual reminders of the Twin Towers as they were on 9/11, no matter what the intention was. Nor do most want to see any stark reminders of the after effects, the most poignant would include those people jumping out of windows.

There are numerous visuals of that day, and very few of them are neutral. Maybe the First Responders could be depicted, if you get their family’s permission. That’s what I’d suggest. So, you will always have the divided camps, both having a full right to their opinion.
There aren’t many other graphic symbols one could use to represent that day except maybe just the typography. If you print out 9/11/01, (or just 9/11) most people know what that refers to.

Anyone outraged by that should pack up and leave the US.

The reason this display, which is clever and shows no disrespect to the 911 victims, is getting criticized is because it was done at Walmart.

I might not call it phony, but I would call it misplaced.

‘I have mixed opinions on this and a couple other related stories. On one hand, it’s sad to see a commercialization of 9/11. On the other, it doesn’t seem bad to see different forms of expression towards commemorating it.’

That’s what I’m starting to think.

I’m all for them getting good PR — but not profits. They should give all profits to a charity on that kind of sale. If there are any profits ...
