Wells Fargo apologizes for ads appear to favor science over arts

“A ballerina yesterday. An engineer today. Let’s get them ready for tomorrow,” one ad read.

The ads were intended to celebrate the aspirations of young people, but fell short of the goal, the company said in an apology on its Twitter account.

“An actor yesterday. A botanist today. Let’s get them ready for tomorrow,” another ad read.

The bank, which is based in San Francisco and has its largest employment hub in Charlotte, tweeted out an apology Saturday.

The bank said it gave $93 million last year in support of the arts, culture and education.

They should, as should anyone else, apologize for choosing fact over political correctness.

The way I see it, it demeans the sciences, as the “dream” is the arts, and the “what I had to settle for” is engineering and botany. YMMV

“A ballerina yesterday. An engineer today."

Why has there always been this great push (pressure) to get girls interested in Science/Engineering, etc.?

Study what you want to study, not something that's forced upon you...or when you get a full scholarship.

I could not imagine going into a field of work that I hated.

If a girl wants to become an engineer...great! But why force it upon her simply because it is a male-dominated profession?

This is so ridiculous, I don’t know what to say.

So much stupidity, so much farce, so much shallowness.

And all contrived to dumb down the population by people who are so totally insane that their one overriding obsession is to rule a planet of slaves as gods.

The world needs engineers.

Ballerinas? Not so much.

This suggests that they want people who can repay Wells Fargo loans. Engineers can. Starving artists, not so much.

I think you should study what you're good at. Generally that's the same as what you want, but not always. Follow your talent, not your passion.

Nope. And I've gotten along just fine.

True enough.

The world needs art. The ability to appreciate the beautiful and unique is one thing that distinguishes us as human.

But all of the art in the world won't build bridges or houses or grow food to put on the table. The world needs engineers, farmers, scientists, plumbers, electricians, etc etc etc ....first.

Ballerinas? Not so much. Why are you dragging Rahm Emanuel into this story?

My girlfriend steered her daughter into the engineering profession when she was just out of high school. Her daughter attended Michigan Tech University in the U.P. of Michigan and became a mechanical engineer at the age of 25. Today, the daughter works at the GM Tech Center in Warren, Mi. and earns a substantial wage. Women engineers can pretty much write their own ticket in this high tech world that we live in today.

My advice to my grandsons: Pursue your dream in your spare time or as a hobby but study and pursue education in a field where you can get a job that will pay the bills.

A friend has a profitable small engineering firm and works very hard so that he can buy artwork and toys. And he has lots of toys including an airplane, sail boat, jet ski and jeep for off roading.

Why should Wells Fargo apologize?

So many people are artistic that the chance of actually earning a living at art is pretty low. But the employability of a scientist, engineer, accountant, etc., is very good.

My advice is this: Go with your talents and desires, but do the market research first and go with whatever has the best job opportunities. Even if a subject is not your favorite, you will develop more of an interest in it as you spend more time with it and time around others who are genuinely interested in it.

I love French language and culture, but the majority of job opportunities were in the sciences, so I chose to become a scientist. I do not regret it one bit.

If you are over 40 years old, that engineering job will be given to an H1B visa Indian or Chinaman and you will be working at Walmart.
