afrtsarchive.blogspot.com ^ | From 60s - 70s

Came across an Archive of various AFRTS broadcasts from 60s -70s. Spent Mid 70s in PI - this is the way I remember radio - With Paul Harvey doing news at noon everyday.

To listen to 'Chris' broadcast (example), hit Date with Chris - 1969

Lots of good stuff if you want to go back in time ..

I used to listen to AFRTS while I was in SE Asia. I even taped a large amount on my new reel to reel tape recorder but my sister taped over those when I gave the tape player to her(1968).

One thing I remember, on Okinawa, AFRTS was playing old programs of WWII on TV. When the BOMB was dropped on Hiroshima, the TV went blank for a minute till that segment was passed. They used to broadcast lots of TV shows on radio.

Fantastic find! So much better than today’s consultant-programmed oldies stations and YouTube. Thanks for posting!

As a kid, I lived across the road from the AFRTS broadcast facilty in Okinawa. The production guys used to let my brothers and I sit in the studio while they broadcast the evening news.

I’ll never forget their favorite snack. It was tuna and saltine crackers with Tabasco hot sauce. We kids fell in love with it.

Good memories.

I used to listen to AFRTS on my shortwave all the time. You could get broadcasts of games you couldn’t get anywhere else.

While I was going to the Danang PX with a couple of guys from our artillery battery in late 1966, we were suddenly pushed aside by some MPs as van arrived with the name "Chris Noel" painted on the side. Four army colonels came out of the van - all armed with M3 Grease guns - and they formed a square around a very nice-looking blonde lady in a miniskirt, the first miniskirt I had ever seen and one of the only "round eye" women we had seen in country.

They escorted her into the PX while we waited outside and then when she was ready to go again, they went into that van and then we were allowed to go into the PX.

They whole thing was surreal!

1. I had never heard of Chris Noel before since none of us ever listened to AFRTS (all they ever played was Country and Western).

2. The colonels were there to protect her from US! We were just 19 year old kids and very unlikely to even speak to her - we had just come in from the field and to even see a "round-eye" had us in shock.

Ours was one weird war.
