Gingrich blasts Trump's 'very self-destructive' behavior
Politico ^ | August 3, 2016 | Nick Gass

Donald Trump's behavior over the last week has been "very self-destructive" to his campaign, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday, comparing the Republican nominee to a Hall of Fame quarterback who is in the midst of an interception-throwing slump.

"Trump is still behaving like as though it was the primaries and there were 17 candidates. He has not made the transition to being the potential president of the United States, which is a much tougher league," Gingrich said in an interview with Fox Business' "Mornings with Maria." "People are going to watch you every single day. They’re going to take everything they can out of context, and he is not yet performing at the level that you need to."

Gingrich remarked that Trump's performance recalled quarterback Joe Montana's "stretch during his career where he kept throwing interceptions; and for about half a season, it looked like he wasn’t Joe Montana anymore."

"And then he figured out what he was doing, and he changed. Trump, Trump is in that kind of a slump," said Gingrich, a Trump supporter who was under final consideration for the vice presidential slot before Indiana Gov. Mike Pence was chosen.

"It’s like watching a team go out on the field, throw an interception on the first play and go back off the field again," Gingrich continued, alluding to a host of recent comments and battles Trump has waged over the course of the last week, including sparring with the family of a fallen U.S. Army captain who spoke out against him at the Democratic convention, refusing to back prominent Republicans like Paul Ryan, John McCain and Kelly Ayotte in their elections, joking about tossing a baby out of his rally on Tuesday and generally responding to any personal attack against him."

Looks like Newt switched sides this week.
~ ~ ~ ~
This unreliable behavior is why many of us were concerned about the idea of a Newt VP. Trump got that one right.

Newtie may be correct, but sometimes you can be TOO right. These types of criticisms should be given to Trump in private, not splashed through the media.

That's why you're not in the #2 spot, Newtie.

This is why, Newt, you were not the one chosen to be Trump’s running mate. No one knows where and who you stand with from one interview to the next. I applaud Trump’s choice of Pence, even though throughout the selection process I was rooting for Newt. Glad it didn’t happen! Thank you Trump for making the exact right pick.

Trump needs to leave that to his hit men. He just needs to focus on the issues and the failed policies that have been hurting us.

And an endorsement helps him beat Hillary? Not sure I follow....Paul Ryan has proven to be someone Trump will not be able to work with and constantly undermining his agenda. Paul’s challenger seems more in line with Trump...that’s who we need to win.

Newt, these things are best said IN PRIVATE and BEHIND CLOSED DOORS.

Airing disagreements in public only helps Hillary.

That you’re correct is utterly beside the point.

Appears that Trump made a wise choice for VP after all. Maybe he didn't have much of a choice given what was available.

The GOP needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.

Then what TRUMP must do is call a presser and play every sound byte in its entirety that is available of what he said or didn’t say. THAT SIMPLE.

.And an endorsement helps him beat Hillary? Not sure I follow....

It's one less distraction and let's him focus on Hillary, not intra-party squabbling which the media loves.

If Trump wins it will be by a hair. He needs all of the party support he can get.

And this payback helps him beat Hillary how?

What Trump says today about Ryan won't matter. Ryan will either be reelected or defeated six days from now. Hopefully he will lose because he would be one of the biggest obstacles to a President Trump's following through on the issues that would have won the presidency for him.

Ryan, in his backhanded way, has been trying to damage Trump for several months now and Trump should not endorse him. Remember:

Trump is the Republican nominee.

Ryan is still in his Republican primary with a primary opponent. Big difference and the same goes for Juan McCain.

Trump nor any other Republican is required to endorse anyone in their primary contests.

I’m actually very curious where this all will be in a month. My hope is that things have turned around. I am going to hang onto this thread, and I’ll ping the two of you in a month. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that things are on a winning trajectory at that point.
