Donald Trump's behavior over the last week has been "very self-destructive" to his campaign, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday, comparing the Republican nominee to a Hall of Fame quarterback who is in the midst of an interception-throwing slump.
"Trump is still behaving like as though it was the primaries and there were 17 candidates. He has not made the transition to being the potential president of the United States, which is a much tougher league," Gingrich said in an interview with Fox Business' "Mornings with Maria." "People are going to watch you every single day. Theyre going to take everything they can out of context, and he is not yet performing at the level that you need to."
Gingrich remarked that Trump's performance recalled quarterback Joe Montana's "stretch during his career where he kept throwing interceptions; and for about half a season, it looked like he wasnt Joe Montana anymore."
"And then he figured out what he was doing, and he changed. Trump, Trump is in that kind of a slump," said Gingrich, a Trump supporter who was under final consideration for the vice presidential slot before Indiana Gov. Mike Pence was chosen.
"Its like watching a team go out on the field, throw an interception on the first play and go back off the field again," Gingrich continued, alluding to a host of recent comments and battles Trump has waged over the course of the last week, including sparring with the family of a fallen U.S. Army captain who spoke out against him at the Democratic convention, refusing to back prominent Republicans like Paul Ryan, John McCain and Kelly Ayotte in their elections, joking about tossing a baby out of his rally on Tuesday and generally responding to any personal attack against him."

However, Gingrich proceeds to completely go off the rails and loses me. He goes after Trump for not endorsing John McCain and Paul Ryan.
"And let me just say flatly I am totally for John McCain, who is a great war hero and a terrific human being, who has worked very hard for veterans, and Im totally for Paul Ryan, who is the heart of the House Republican Party and probably the most problem-solving leader weve had in the Congress on the Republican side, I think, in the last 20 years," Gingrich said. "So I think somewhat what Trump has done is just very self-destructive."
Paul Ryan is the most "problem-solving leader" for Republicans in the last 20 years? Really? Really?!!
Trump needs to have someone in his ear who he trusts. Trump needs to know this is not solely about him anymore. We put our trust into him and he has to do certain things, even if he doesn’t want to.
I saw Gingrich slobbering all over Ryan and McCain. I’m done with Gingrich.
Newtie trying to be relevant. He needs to go back and sit on the Pelousy couch again...
In Trump we trust....at least for the hext 4 years.
Trump didn’t do anything wrong.
Trump can be self destructive. He did not get to where he is at in life by sabotaging himself, so I am disappointed in his recent performance.
I believe the Washington elites and 80% of the media have manufactured this ‘rough patch’....Trump did not say anything disparaging about Kahn and his non-endorsement for Paul Ryan is payback for that little boy’s comments throughout the primaries.
I am a Trump supporter but he needs to stop and take a deep breath before opening mouth and inserting foot.
Looks like Newt switched sides this week.
The one who has failed to recognize that compromising with bad policy is like adding a little sewage to your drinking water?
Trump is proving his critics correct. Unfortunately it’s too late to undo the damage.
John InSaine is not a terrific human being and his followers would know he is lying. Gingrich should know if anyone what stepping on your tongue is about. Trump calls it like he sees it and tough if you don’t like it.
Gingrich always has to kiss up to the establishmedia every now and then to keep his credibility. This is why he shouldn’t have been picked as VP.
Pray America wakes
“..I think it is crucial that Trump stay 100% focused on attacking Obama and Hillary because Hillary is Obama’s third term and stay on policy as well. Ignore the haters and don’t let them bait you. People like Buffett, Cuban, Bloomberg, and an assortment of other DNC players will try to get him off message. Ignore them because if you beat Hillary, you’ve beaten them too....”
Yes. The Leftists and GOPe are going to be constantly trying to pull him ‘off message’ and he needs to stay focused on what he is running against. Hitlery and Obama’s history and behavior. Trump should have a group of people (Newt, Rudy, etc) to go after the sideliners. Stay focused on the main target. Hitlery and her immediate enablers.
I still am trying to figure out what constituted this “vicious attack” that Trump made. I have seen every comment from Trump on it, there is nothing he said that would be classified as some out-of-bounds attack. In fact, you can hardly call his comments an attack.
You sound like a broken record. Imagine what they would have done with Cruz.
Sour grapes.
Please me Trimp’s attack quote on the Khan’s.
Please provide me Trump’s so called non-endorsement of Ryan.
Thank you.
Trump was asked to name his sacrifices. He was attacked by this man. The man didn’t condemn radical Islam.
Fighting back is out of bounds to the mediots and GOPe.
