Donald Trump's behavior over the last week has been "very self-destructive" to his campaign, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday, comparing the Republican nominee to a Hall of Fame quarterback who is in the midst of an interception-throwing slump.
"Trump is still behaving like as though it was the primaries and there were 17 candidates. He has not made the transition to being the potential president of the United States, which is a much tougher league," Gingrich said in an interview with Fox Business' "Mornings with Maria." "People are going to watch you every single day. Theyre going to take everything they can out of context, and he is not yet performing at the level that you need to."
Gingrich remarked that Trump's performance recalled quarterback Joe Montana's "stretch during his career where he kept throwing interceptions; and for about half a season, it looked like he wasnt Joe Montana anymore."
"And then he figured out what he was doing, and he changed. Trump, Trump is in that kind of a slump," said Gingrich, a Trump supporter who was under final consideration for the vice presidential slot before Indiana Gov. Mike Pence was chosen.
"Its like watching a team go out on the field, throw an interception on the first play and go back off the field again," Gingrich continued, alluding to a host of recent comments and battles Trump has waged over the course of the last week, including sparring with the family of a fallen U.S. Army captain who spoke out against him at the Democratic convention, refusing to back prominent Republicans like Paul Ryan, John McCain and Kelly Ayotte in their elections, joking about tossing a baby out of his rally on Tuesday and generally responding to any personal attack against him."

It’s not just one thing. It’s one thing after another. Makes you think he’s intentionally losing the election.
Newt trying to control Trump through public conversation? This isnt the way for Newt to do this!!!
I disagree with Newt about McCain and Ryan. But I agree that Trump needs to ignore enemies whose names aren’t Obama and Hillary.
As Giuliani said, that’s why you have people like him and Newt. Let them go after the lesser enemies. Any attack by any lesser foe, he should find a way to tie that back to Hillary and Obama and focus the attack there.
Who said I supported Cruz? Once again, assuming things that are just not so.
More Politico BS.
Come back in a month and let’s see if they were still mistakes.
Spot on.
Punching back at everyone who questions him probably feels good but does nothing to get him elected in the general.
Keep in mind, Gingrich has ALWAYS been a pro amnesty, open border best friend of Grover Norquist.
THIS IS ALL ABOUT immigration.....Trump is right and the big $$$ in immigration wants him gone!
BTW
Keep in mind, that making the E5 BIG $$$ immigrant visas permanent is RYANs objective in the house. This is ALL about $$$$! Ryan is OWNED by an immigration lawyer, Cesar Conda, who along with Grover Norquist/Rove got E5s put into Bushs immigration policies.
Some (Grassley) are trying to reform the E5 because it is a FRAUD magnet. Others like Ryan, Flake, McCain want it left as is....CORRUPT.
It remains to be seen how this will affect EB-5. There is a very good chance that it will mean a continuation of the program without reform. How long it will take to pass specific EB-5 legislation aside from the broader matter of sweeping reform is anybodys guess

Agree. Pausing and thinking before hitting that send button would help.
Gingrich knows that this is a media-contrived tempest....and should know better than to make these comments.
What Trump has not done here is to come up with a definitive statement (kill shot) that will shut down Khan, and the democRATS.
Need to work that out in advance before tearing into Khan.
Like playing (8-ball) bar pool. You have to look two or three shots down the table to make certain you opponent has no chance to win.
It took him a month to recover last time. He has the ability to do so, so lets hope.
He needs to allow his VP do the talking.
And this payback helps him beat Hillary how?
Gingrich, this is why you weren’t chosen to be Trump’s running mate. You’re not part of the movement. You pretend you are, but you’re trying to co-opt it. Trump understood that.
Still don’t get the media? It never ever ends. Never.
He never said anything wrong.
Newt will newt and then nuke himself.
It’s happened before, over and over again .....
Our leaders, and leaders all over the world should keep Trump’s philosophy in mind, “If you hit me, I will hit you back”.
I am only offering thoughtful analysis.
