I have done a fresh install of Win 7 OS but I can't get the windows updates. It's been a few days and I am getting nothing from MS - I've tried several "fixes" suggested on different OS forums, but still nothing. Anyone have any suggestions?

Your claim that Firefox has a keylogger built in made me curious, so I did a search on the term, ‘Firefox keylogger’.
There are pages and pages of results for extensions you can add on to Firefox to defeat malicious keyloggers, but not a single reference for the browser having a built-in keylogger that reports back to Mozilla.
It appears your claim is false.
Not sure why I typed Firefox in the list. It could have been the pain pills, but was not intentional. I should have stuck with the search engines to try to make my point.

I run Linux Mint 18 and run Win7 32 bit in VMWare player in linux rarely. Installing and keeping Windows updated is a nightmare I don’t have to endure any more.

After that, let Windows Update run its "Checking for updates..." for a very long time, at least eight hours with a fast connection, before giving up.
Of course Firefox has a keylogger. That’s how it is able (with the user’s permission) to record passwords.
IMHO, you’re probably better off with anything else.
Knowing the computer industry as I do, I see where Microsoft saves money giving away windows 10 for free.
They want to get EVERYONE onto one operating system, so they can lay-off tens of thousands of people supporting old versions.
