One of the country's leading poultry companies, Perdue Farms, announced plans Monday to make both life and death a little easier for its chickens.

The changes are a break with current standard practices in the industry, and animal welfare groups are cheering.

“One time I saw a help wanted ad for a “de-beaker”. You take one chick at a time and chop off the pointy end of their beak so they can’t hurt each other. Heck of a job.”

I did that with Turkeys. It was a job I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

Maybe. I think I recall that stress releases some sort of hormone or chemical that causes the meat to not taste as good, or the texture to not be as good.

That’s one reason halal is worse than, say, kosher. The technique used in the halal process is very painful, which causes the animal to release some sort of chemical that taints the meat.

I’m just going by recollection, though. I think my facts are right, though ...

Bravo to you husbandry has been going on for centuries, since mankind domesticated animals.

I want to raise my own chickens but hubby won’t let me.

I am no animal rights nut but I do think that raising them and dispatching them in the most humane way possible is the right thing to do.

After all, they give us sustenance and we should be grateful to them for giving us their lives, and in thanks should not make their lives or deaths miserable.

We have five hens because we gave up factory eggs several years ago and the cage free and free range are pretty pricey. Ours live in a gourmet predator proof coop with custom built henhouse courtesy of Mr.GG2. They are spoiled rotten. I wish we coujcoujld have a hundred but we are currently still in the burbs.

I have seen the latest Perdue ads and applaud them. Yet I have never seen Perdue chicken in any of the major grocery chains in metro Phoenix. Plenty of Tyson, which we won’t buy because of Klinton affiliation, so we go with local, Foster, or Sanderson Farms.

There’s nothing that brightens the day faster than a dancing chicken.

I have no problem with a company choosing to treat its animals well, regardless of their future.

We are the stewards of this earth.

Genesis 1:28

And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Genesis 1:26

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

1 Peter

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace:

Colossians 1:16-17

For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Job 12:7-10

“But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you; or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you. Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.

Most cities these days allow up to three or four hens...maybe you can check and see. I love my chickens and while many of them are going to end up as dinner a few of the ladies who are so sweet and special to me are definitely going to die of old age! You can’t help but love these little critters who just want your company whether you have food or not.

Would they be any tastier if they had music piped in 24/7?

Yes. They need this.

I think Nate Bargatze is hilarious!

It’s just a different view on happy chickens.
