You can totally have regional outage with a satellite based system. They’re jamming, jammers have a range, which makes it regional.

It would be impossible to have regional GPS outages if the GPS system were satellite based.

It's military signal jamming. Of course it could be regional.

Uh...no. The interference sources are ground based. All one has to do is create enough noise in the GPS frequency band that the GPS satellite based signals are masked. It does take a considerable amount of noise since GPS signals and receivers are designed to be distinguishable with noise, but at some point the receiver can no longer track the signal.

Thank you for that interesting fact.
You and many others did a lot of vital work back then that we should appreciate.
Sadly few today are aware of the decades it took technology to advance to our current take for granted covenience magic.

RE: “Interesting fact:

All GPS satellites were built by Rockwell International, Seal Beach, CA. (Now Boeing Space and Communications Group)

I had an office there back in the mid-80s when I worked for the Defense Dept.”

The originals may have been build there, but most of the current ones are a mix of Lockheed and Boeing.

“Lots of people know how to use paper road maps, but how many can fold them properly?”

The funny ting is that for pilots, knowing how to properly use/fold maps in the cockpit is an actual tested skill. It is amazing to watch pilots have open charts that block their view.

“It would be impossible to have regional GPS outages if the GPS system were satellite based.

This is evidence that GPS is ground based. It is merely an extension of an earlier technology (WWII) named LORAN.

You can test this by driving south into Mexico from California. You GPS signal will diminish and disappear as you drive south.

One of the dumbest posts ever.

Then please explain the bit about the signal disappearing as you drive south into Mexico.

That's why my next car will have a HUD. ;)

So, what is your explanation for the signal disappearing as you drive south into Mexico?

“Well well well, anybody think they won’t deploy this throughout the country?”

If it looks like we are under attack, you bet. Who wants a foreign version of JDAM targeting our assets? Who wants alien sapper teams navigating by GPS?

It sure as Hell isn’t because the Navstar spacecraft are on the ground. What a retarded conclusion.

When it comes to signal range a satellite is functionally a REALLY tall tower, nothing terribly magical about it, and still subject to being on the other wrong side of the horizon and unreachable. If the satellites your GPS is talking to are exclusively over America you will still wind up over the horizon eventually.

The signal loss in Mexico is persistent and continuous.

I’ve noticed over the last few years there’s been a re-emergence of flat earth theory, which among many things, states that satellites are impossible and fake, because they cannot escape earth’s firmament.
Is that what your comment is eluding to?
You’re amongst FRiends, come’on. Please ‘splain.
Lots of military and defense contractor engineers here want to know how fooled they’ve / we’ve been ‘bout satellites, space n stuff... ;n)

Gotta believe this is defensive technology to protect from GPS guided bad things.
