FAA Warns of GPS Outages This Month During Mysterious Tests on the West Coast

Well well well, anybody think they won’t deploy this throughout the country?
FAA notifies...
More:
The FAA issued an advisory warning pilots on Saturday that global positioning systems (GPS) could be unreliable during six different days this month, primarily in the Southwestern United States. On June 7, 9, 21, 23, 28, and 30th the GPS interference testing will be taking place between 9:30am and 3:30pm Pacific time. But if youre on the ground, you probably wont notice interference.
The testing will be centered on China Lake, Californiahome to the Navys 1.1 million acre Naval Air Weapons Center in the Mojave Desert. The potentially lost signals will stretch hundreds of miles in each direction and will affect various types of GPS, reaching the furthest at higher altitudes. But the jamming will only affect aircraft above 5,000 feet. As you can see from the FAA map below, the jamming will almost reach the California-Oregon border at 4o,000 feet above sea level and 505 nautical miles at its greatest range.
No matter the mode of transport, it’s a pretty good idea to have a clue how to navigate without the technology.
Who needs GPS when charts and a watch are had pretty easily.
Lots of people know how to use paper road maps, but how many can fold them properly?
or asking for directions.
Well it does revolve heavily around military satellites and was put in place for the military. We get to use it as a convenience.
Be Prepared...
Just like the Interweb Pipes...
“driverless” cars use GPS. How would this work out if all cars were “driverless” as some people would like to see?
They laughed when I bought the trailer... Who's laughing now!?!
that’s gonna upset the ramadan festivities... how will they find their targets.
Could it be they are anticipating a major shift in GPS location of significant portions of this area?
That backbone has grown. But in the event of a real emergency we should expect a lot of the internet will get “reverted” to a private network and we’ll lose a fair chunk of bandwidth.
Not a problem. Can also fold large-format construction plans starting with a flat sheet.
It would be impossible to have regional GPS outages if the GPS system were satellite based.
This is evidence that GPS is ground based. It is merely an extension of an earlier technology (WWII) named LORAN.
You can test this by driving south into Mexico from California. You GPS signal will diminish and disappear as you drive south.
You are a sage
Interesting fact:
All GPS satellites were built by Rockwell International, Seal Beach, CA. (Now Boeing Space and Communications Group)
I had an office there back in the mid-80s when I worked for the Defense Dept.
There were a fair number of tests on Yuma Proving Ground, while I was working there, that basically jammed GPS signals.
Our upper air instruments depended on GPS, so it was a significant problem on some days.
This was available at least 10 years ago.
