"Without doubt it is the most important discovery of my career," he told The Local.

"I have been searching the caves of the Basque Country for ten years and have discovered lots of new caves but none as important as Atxurra. It could very well be the cave with the most animal figures in the Basque Country," he added.

The Atxurra caves were originally discovered in 1929, but as the paintings are at a depth of 300 metres, they went undiscovered until now.

Spain boasts a number of cave paintings including Altamira, which has been billed as the "Sistine Chapel of Paleolithic art".

In March 2015, 20,000-year-old cave paintings were discovered in Cantabria, northern Spain, making the area the "European capital of rock art"

Hobo markings?

Yes. Clearly homeless people lived in these caves.

I think the “paintings” represent important events in the life of the tribe or one of the members, much like the American Indians painted their tribe or personal history on animal skins or later, ledger books.

It's fun to have fun, but I think your theory is more on the mark as to why these drawings were made so long ago.
Think of the extremely limited technology of the time for securing food and the time and effort expended.
Then the logistics and skills necessary in making a suitable fire for cooking and another for the cave artists.
It seems more likely that the artists of those times and their works were valued by the people of their time, and ours.

They’re more mobile than the legless four-winged chickens.

Levitaters... they wear blue jeans, even though they have no legs, it’s weird...
