I live by myself and had been away from home for 12 hours. I often leave my home computer turned on even when I am gone. Last night, I noticed my computer screen was on and my computer was downloading Windows 10. I tried to stop it and, when I couldn't, I simply shut the computer off.
After turning it back on, it said "restoring to your previous version" and I'm now back to Windows 7. I noticed that somehow my update settings had all been changed to allow Microsoft maximum access and Windows 10 upgrade was now categorized as "important" rather than "recommended".
I caught the upgrade when it was at 12% so it had not reached the point of uninstalling so I suspect I have just a partial version on my hard drive that can't do anything.
Needless to say, I was furious so I contacted Microsoft support and gave "Andrew Z" a piece of my mind. It's one thing to ask me to upgrade. It's a whole 'nother thing to force the upgrade behind my back.
I turned off all Windows updates (not recommended) and told them I will switch when *I* think it's best, not when they do.
Or you could get a Mac...
It appears so, according to wikipedia; here:
Both EVE and the TPU implementation of EDT are still distributed with OpenVMS.
I'm the guy that loves the Unity version of Ubuntu 16.04.
Creates incompatibility issues mixing OSes.
Air Gap PC NEVER gets a virus, never spied upon.
Personal data is SAFE.
I used the heck out of the control K feature. I may still have a copy of Boston Computing’s EDT that ran on a PC.
Me too (and it ain't going to be to WX!)
Best just to comply with the requested updates. Microsoft wouldn’t be reccomending it if it wasn’t for your own good. Don’t want to ruffle any feathers.
There were small things I didn't like about Ubuntu when I tried a few years ago. I switched to Mint and I love it.
I upgraded from Win 7 on one machine and 8.1 on another, over the last few days, and on my Surface Pro 3 a few months ago. Runs flawlessly on ALL machines. Quite pleased. Run SSDs on two machines, and it boots like right NOW!! Love it.
My buddy was running Windows 7, and he wa sone who just refused to upgrade to 10, but he also wanted to play some Killer Instinct, so only one way to do that on PC.
So after a couple of days he messaged me - man, I feel so stupid for trying ot avoid it for so long, it’s great.
7 was pretty solid, so I can understand why some want to stick with it, but 10 is just so smooth.
I can’t understand at all why anyone would want to stick with 8.1. That is the worst OS I have ever seen.
Indeed.
The software I use for business will not certify on Windows 10, not for another year at least.
“Syntax Error: No Revenues Today”
Fair enough.
My mom has a similar concern with her business, so she is unfortunately stuck on 8.1 for now, and that is truly the worst OS I have ever seen.
WTH is wrong with Microsoft? Why do they want us to have Windows 10 so badly? Is this some kind of conspiracy to take over our computers or use Windows 10 to brainwash us somehow?
Null and void, this may actually be up your alley.
I like the Metro Browser on my Surface Pro 2, I don’t want to loose it by going from 8.1 to 10. Is there a way to keep it going under Windows 10?
It happened to us last evening, too. We had avoided all the nagware for weeks; we didn’t want Windows 10; and now we seem to be stuck with it. I don’t think we did anything different than we’ve always done to decline it.
Everything seems to still be there and work pretty much the same, but it all seems very sneaky.

Both Ubuntu and Mint have the Mate desktop now. Life is good!
‘OpenVMS is being ported to the x86_64 architecture, that could shake things up in the PC market.’
They are 25 years too late. It’s not just a port that makes an OS successful. BeOS/Solaris was ported too, and nobody gave a sht.
