I recommend Linux Mint 17.x.

I'm the guy that loves the Unity version of Ubuntu 16.04.

I'm glad the two are very closely linked...Mint being a variant of Ubuntu.

There were small things I didn't like about Ubuntu when I tried a few years ago. I switched to Mint and I love it.
