He should have gone to a zoo — the San Diego Zoo, for example, has a bison exhibit. He would have been perfect there. I’m wondering if there isn’t more to this story.

Bison are not an endangered species. It was probably sick and would have died anyway.

That is nature.

Sending it to a zoo would’ve been nice if there’s one that would pay to hold the darn thing until they could come get it or have it delivered. But I would seriously hope there isn’t a pen or corral at Yellowstone for any wild animals. The whole point of Yellowstone is to best reflect what happens in the true wilderness. I’d be very unhappy to learn there are places for wild animals to be placed.

There was a previous story about the tourists taking the bison calf to the park rangers. That story said they took the bison calf back to the herd. THIS article is the rest of the story, with the bad ending.

That’s what happens with a herd mentality — the herd moves on, you can’t keep up, you get left behind. That’s probably why those tourists picked up the calf in the first place. I hope those rangers will have nightmares for a long time.

Yes, it was expendable. There is no shortage of buffalo.

The “more to the story” is that the buffalo are already overgrazing their range. Wolves used to take care of the excess baby buffalo. Now granola-eaters are evidently doing the job.

"I’m wondering if there isn’t more to this story."

It sounded strange to me right from the beginning. During spring migrations to high country, I've seen young calves moved in trailers that had no trouble being welcomed back by their mothers. I can't imagine a buffalo being so different that it needed killing.

There is.

Brucellosis quarantine.

Per local Sioux Falls newspaper.

Could not afford to do the long quarantine to prevent spread risk.

Also, noted as foreigners who helped.

The enviro-weenies at the park probably killed it to try and teach the tourists a lesson. Lefties don’t like people not following their rules. This was a way to stick it to them good. Enviro-weenies will be the first ones to kill a bunch of animals if it serves their ends. Their desire isn’t to protect nature, it’s to control humans.
