Perhaps this is why a major cause of death in centuries prior to the Twentieth was attributed to a condition referred to as “consumption”.

_______________
Consumption was the old name for TB. A disease that consumes the patient.

"Consumption" is, of course, Tuberculosis, though whether anyone prior to the last century knew the difference between the infection and any number of other diseases long-known to be affected by nutrition, "prayer and fasting" I leave to those with more steadfast memory.
Carefully regulated fasting, "intermittent fasting" has long been known to slow, and in some case halt certain cancers. It's strongly associated with longevity in general. Older adults, I've heard in said, continue to grow older (all other things being accounted for) safely cutting their daily calorie intake by half.
Recently I heard read of a "study" linking carefully planned "intermittent fasting" with stimulating one's adult stem cells to repair tissue.
Is it starve a cold, feed a fever?

There might be some application in pre cancer, as we’re told cancer cells are formed in our body all the time, and perhaps, fasting, and being lean cleans you, but to fast when you have cancer is absurd, the cancer devours you.

OTOH, some cancers do respond to this, for example prostate cancer stage one
