Perhaps this is why a major cause of death in centuries prior to the Twentieth was attributed to a condition referred to as “consumption”.

Consumption was the old name for TB. A disease that consumes the patient.
I think the poster may have meant to say ‘conspicuous consumption’, as in pigging out, not TB ‘consumption.’
