Windows 10 build 14342: No more friendly Wi-Fi sharing (But more Linux-friendly)
The Register ^ | May 11, 2016 | Gavin Clarke

The latest Windows 10 preview has been released by Microsoft, with changes making it more Linux and web-friendly.

Gone, however, is automatic Wi-Fi sharing with contacts, with Microsoft citing low uptake over cost of development.

Extensions to Edge, Microsoft’s browser alternative to Internet Explorer, in Windows 10 build 14342 can now be downloaded from the Windows Store.

It ends the need to extract and load them from a local store but, Microsoft has warned pioneers, you’ll have to re-install any extensions they might have.

Extensions are also available for AdBlock and Adblock Plus and a range of other applications while Edge also now works with real-time notifications.

Running Linux tools and utilities on Windows also got easier.

A range of improvements to Bash on Ubuntu sees Symlinks within Windows Subsystem for Linux now work on the mounted Windows directories.

Other changes include a range of fixes to the Windows 10 build.

Removed from build 14342 is Wi-Fi Sense for sharing networks with your contacts and automatically connecting to Wi-Fi networks with those shared by your contacts.

Gabe Aul, engineering systems team corporate vice president, blogged:

“The cost of updating the code to keep this feature working combined with low usage and low demand made this not worth further investment. Wi-Fi Sense, if enabled, will continue to get you connected to open Wi-Fi hotspots that it knows about through crowdsourcing.”

Tried that. I run a really clean, streamlined computer. Learned years ago how to shut all the extra BS down so I could just run my trading program.
It’s not that. Most times there’s nothing running but what I’m using. Has baffled me.
But thanks!

I installed W10 in an eight year old Dell Laptop. I had some random BSOD. I updated the BIOS to the latest available and most of the BSOD problems were resolved.

I run MalwareBytes Pro on a daily basis. You might have a virus or malware grabbing your system. Just a thought.

You might need to reinstall Win 10. Or a fresh Install.

The boot up problem may be related to the Microsoft online account thing or lack thereof.

I know that when I changed over from 7 to 10 my login password changed from one on the computer itself to the Microsoft account one.

I don’t use this computer much anymore anyway so haven’t spent a lot of time on the problem. If it gets to bothering me too much I may do that. Thx!

Good luck.

It might be something frustrating like Windows tries to validate your license every time the computer boots and if you don’t have network access, etc. This is unlikely but a good conspiracy theory. I don’t trust Microsoft and Windows 10.

If it is still under warranty, you might ask the tech support.

Exactly. Very annoying and then your lan/file server user name and passwords don't work anymore and you have to force it back.

I bought a win10 surface 3. The camera app wouldn’t work and I had to do a system reinstall, which was no big deal. Also I’ve had to reset IE11, because YouTube suddenly quit working. And forget using my fingers so scroll. Use the stylus. Other than that it’s settling down. I did buy the extended warrantee and drop/spill/tech support. Also I upgraded my 2009 Toshiba without a hitch over a fresh win7 install.

Wife just got a new Windows 10 PC. After griping about Linux for 6 months.

I HATE IT because I cannot access the Windows 10 machine's shared printers from an Ubuntu machine without a login on the Windows 10 machine.

I have searched everywhere for a solution. Even when you set "don't use passwords" on Windows 10, it still does.

Sounds like it went okay for you.

I have done from scratch installs and upgrades and neither have been fun — do you have this drive and that and then search the Internet if something doesn't work. Then there is general stability — newer OSs tend to be buggy.

“Windows peaked with version 7.”

Indeed.

I turned on my computer one morning a few weeks ago and it said Welcome to Windows 10. Needless to say I was pissed. I never gave permission for the upgrade.

Everything looks the same as 8.1. There were a few problems with my router but otherwise, seems to be working ok.

Exactly. And why put yourself through if you don’t have to.
