Deputies: Deltona Man Finds Bullet Hole 3 Days After Shooting Himself

A Deltona man shot himself while cleaning a handgun but did not discover the bullet hole in his arm until three days later when he changed shirts, Volusia County sheriff's deputies said.

Deputies were called to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City on Saturday where Michael Blevins, 37, had checked himself after discovering the bullet wound, investigators said.

Blevins told deputies that on Thursday he was cleaning a .22 caliber pistol in the living room of his Whitewood Drive home, a report stated.

Blevins could not be reached Monday as his voicemail was full.

The Deltona resident told deputies he held the gun against his chest so his dog wouldn’t jump up near it. But as Blevins stood up he felt a sharp pain, causing his back to give out, and he fell face down. Blevins said he heard a loud gunshot and then he hit his face against the edge of a glass coffee table, the report said.

Blevins said he did not feel any pain from the gunshot, possibly because of the medicine he takes for an old back injury, and only felt pain above his left eyebrow that got cut when he hit the table, deputies said.

Blevins said he was wearing a black, long-sleeve shirt and did not notice the injury on his left arm as he went about his normal routine for the next two days.

It was not until the third day on Saturday when Blevins changed into a light brown shirt, which revealed the blood stains, deputies said.

Blevins removed the shirt and noticed an entrance and exit wound on his arm that was barely bleeding at the time because the wound had cauterized, deputies said.

Deputies accompanied Blevins to his home after he was discharged and, after examining the scene, determined Blevins accidentally shot himself, the report concluded.

...exit wound on his arm that was barely bleeding at the time because the wound had cauterized, deputies said.

cau·ter·ize - verb

"burn the skin or flesh of (a wound) with a heated instrument or caustic substance, typically to stop bleeding or prevent the wound from becoming infected."

Dear Deputies,

The lesson here is that one should change one’s shirt at least every other day.

Any report of a shooting incident that starts with "I was cleaning my gun" is probably suspect. Same with "the gun just went off".

Call it what it was, negligent gun handling. Combined with poor hygiene.

Yeah, sounds like deer camp to me. I've come home with cuts and burns I never realized I had until I got back home and took a shower.

Does this "medicine" come in a big bottle with the words "Jim Beam" on it?

Note that whenever a person presents with a gun injury the ER always calls the police. Always.

Then the police try to build a case - either against a perp or against YOU.

So if you just had an innocent run in with a bullet like this guy, the police will be all over you like a bug, but you are not under any obligation to talk to them. My policy is not to talk to them unless it is in my best interest or the best interest of innocent people who are experiencing injustice.

The police rarely improve a situation.

The subject in this story is guilty of illegal discharge of a firearm, and if he talked enough, most police departments would use that to charge him. Looks like this department did not.

I also remember reading about that, recall it from Reader’s Digest, as do posters at this link:

http://www.thehulltruth.com/boating-forum/60780-shooting-boat-shore-gunfire.html#b

However, since it came from Reader’s Digest, and I’ve been hearing about all the urban legends RD spawned over the years (Remember Yellow Ribbon?), and especially BJ Clinton and his wife moving in next door to RD, and now trust Reader’s Digest less than I trust the Hussein Heads fawning over their god at Snopes.

Even when I go hunting (for any number of days) I take changes of skivvies, jeans, and shirts.
May not be able to bucket wash every day, but I find that even after one day of humpin the hills or running across the desert after the little gray birds, I stink.
I figure that if the flies and mosquitos don’t want to have anything to do with me, my wife would probably take a flame thrower to me when I got home.

The guy is an idiot for reporting it. A through-and-through wound, that he didn’t feel happen, took three days to discover and was barely bleeding. Put a freaking bandaid on it and never tell anyone how stupid you are. lol

Well, I have to admit that I misplace things myself from time to time.

That’s what I was thinking. Three days with no shower? Eww! I could not go 1 day without a shower.
