While I am sure that most would opt to select .223/5.56 NATO over .22LR for home defense, but I have heard the argument that .22 would be better for home defense since its reduced energy would mean that it would penetrate through fewer walls. On the flip side, others argue that the 5.56 would be better as the round would tumble dissipating its energy and thus penetrate less.

LOL! NOT in the house. Outside.
00 Buck in an over/under.
Only way to go.
I tried 2 of those 12 gauge Flechette on a paper target backed by cardboard. Not as impressive as they look. Some of the darts hit sideways, some barely stuck in the target. A few penetrated the target with a less than impressive pinhole.
I would use 00 buckshot instead. Nine .33 caliber holes are more confidence inspiring.
The four stupidest words in the field of firearms: It’s just a 22.
Ping for later, some of these comments are hysterical.
Both loaded with frangible rounds. They pack a punch but dissipate their energy laterally very quickly. If you hit the target you do damage. If you miss, they won't penetrate the walls.
...That whole kachunk think doesn’t fly with me. That means the gun wasn’t ready to fire and you may have given up your surprise advantage....
We used to travel with an 870 in the trunk before the CCW days
When Ina motel on I 10, it leaned against the nightstand whenat 3am the room door kicked open. But,the secondary
chain lock kept it from opening. Just woke up, groggy, poor visibility etc.
I grabbed the 870, loaded it and the would be invaders heard the unmistakable instant kerchunk sound, and a female voice yelled, “Don’t shoot. Don’t shoot. We be leaving. We be leaving.”
And the woman and her two male friends high tailed it down the stairs. Informed management, Left the motel
Neat, tidy, no trauma. No paperwork, no mess, no fuss. No police interrogations, no trip delay.
5 rounds of 00 were ready at the pull of the trigger.
The real world calls for judgment calls. You have to make your own decision at the instant. It was one of the two million Crime preventions yearly that’s not publicized.
223 doesn’t tumble. Get a shotgun. Just racking it will often send an intruder packing.
By the way, six were in the tube.
There would be the intruder between you and the wall. I’m not talking shooting at a blank drywall. The #6 will not go through the guy and into the drywall x2 into the next apartment. Close in, the pattern diameter would be less than 6 inches.
If you are worried about penetration of drywall, then you probably aren’t really in fear of your life.
Much of this has to do with where the perp is located, where your family is located, and how far away the perp is. There is NO WAY to judge what situation you will find yourself in with milliseconds to decide what to do. If you are facing a perp and your child’s bedroom is right behind him, I hope you know where your child’s bed is located to know where to place the shot. Almost any round of any caliber is dangerous at 5 yards. The wad of a shotgun hasn’t traveled far enough to spread the shot and you end up with a lead slug at that distance that will go through most interior walls. This might be a fun exercise to talk about, but in real life, you will almost always be in a non optimal situation. The main function of home defense is to stop the perp. Using frangible ammo, or trying to plan your situation will almost always end up not being the case. If frangible ammo hits furniture or another object, you just wasted your first chance to end the situation. A .223 will go through several walls and even multiple studs and all but possibly brick walls would be penetrated. For me, a pistol of at least 9mm would be the choice for close range narrow spaces. Hopefully if you are inside a home, you could hit what your shooting at at 5-10 yds even while exited, so even a .38 spcl would do fine.
From barrel end to invader. I’m not talking at shooting at a blank wall for no reason. The guy would be between you and any wall.
Well. If wall penetration is your concern then 22lr.
The other great thing about 22lr (or use to be if you can find it) is you can buy it cheap and practice like crazy without breaking the bank. A Ruger MK2 is a fantastic inexpensive hand gun. I have not been impressed with any other “mouseguns.” Stick to the trusted Browning or Rugers.
But as with all firearms. Private ownership is scary and causes violence. Only government officials can be trusted with firearms.
You can cut down on the penetration by using hollow point projectiles. Maybe enough to save not only your life but your neighbor’s when you miss at least once during any encounter.
I am real partial to my Judge. #7 bird shot followed by two PDX1 410 shot (3 DD & 12 BBs) followed by two PDX1 45 colt 225 grain JHP. Followed by 7 380 90 grain hollow points. Followed by 5 .38 Spc 258 grain hollow points. That it for bedside table and that is not enough, I am in deep doodo. Unless mama’s gets them with her 6 .22 hollow points.
I'm more of a cocked and locked person. Glad you were able to get loaded in time.

There's no magic to it. Jeff Cooper was right: rule 4, know your target and what's behind it. Or build your house out of armor plating. Hey...wait a minute, now that's a thought...
