Docking in a luxury marina is about the only place to catch a random glimpse of Tiger, who moves through the world in a cocoon of his own creation. When he bought his plane, he blocked the tail number from tracking websites: It ends in QS, the standard code for NetJets. Many athletes, by contrast, have some sort of vanity registration, and some even have custom paint jobs; Michael Jordan's plane is detailed in North Carolina blue, and his tail number is N236MJ -- the "6" is for his titles. Jack Nicklaus flies around in N1JN nicknamed Air Bear. Sitting on a tarmac, Tiger's plane looks like it belongs to an anonymous business traveler, nothing giving away its famous owner. He comes and goes quietly.
Standing at the southwest corner of the marina, Tiger and his group make plans for later, and then he walks off down the road. There's no entourage or Team Tiger, no agent or handlers or managers, just a middle-aged man alone, coming to terms with himself and his future, which will hold far more quiet marinas in the years ahead than packed fairways. Not long ago, he asked Jordan a simple yet heavy question: How did you know when it was time to walk away?

Thank you for posting this. I had wondered what was going on in Tiger’s life.
Just finished reading the article. Excellent insight into the real Tiger Woods.......thanks for posting.
It was pretty amazing, and although I am not a Tiger fan, I found it quite sad.
I didn’t read the article - only the opening salvo. I live near the marina mentioned. Tiger is around a bit. A golf pro friend of mine saw Tiger 10 days ago. Tiger is hitting balls at full speed and looks better than all the doomsayers say. We will see.
Tiger tried to come back too soon several times, he needs to take a year or even two off to fully heal.
When you think about it, golf was Tiger's entire life since he was 4 years old.
Back in the early 80's I used to run a lot of 5 and 10k races as a recreational runner. There was a young girl in her early teens who was a brilliant runner and totally dominated her age group throughout the state.
Unfortunately she was coached by her father who was an unmerciful tyrant and by the time she got to high school, he had completely destroyed her will to run anymore......and she never did.
I know that story is neither here nor there but it makes you wonder if Tiger's golfing career wasn't more to please his father than it was for himself.
I think in some respects Tiger is probably happier now that he doesn't have to perform and please the rest of the world.
Yep, that's who it was...........what a shame
I think to some extent it is the price one pays for excellence. That dog is the very best at what he does. Dolly Parton talked about it. I do think it helps to be a left-winger. Conservatives eat each other alive.
I read it on the ESPN.com web site and it tells me Tiger Woods’ stunted social life in the end caught up to him.
Hemorrhoids??
Lengthy, but fascinating article!
Why should he, it's his personal life.
Just because one is a super sports star does not give you the right to his or their personal life...
He, or his handlers and Earl, constructed a façade.
There was no construct by Tiger, his handlers or his father. He is what he is and the attention he garnered was the fault of the sporting world and the MSM who are more inclined to destroy an athlete after they have built them up.
Tiger Woods never sought the attention he got, it came along with his personal successes. That's why he and the other top athletes of this time have "handlers"...........
ESPN and The Golf Network and the other acronyms are responsible for the "alleged" "Facade" you claim.........
The bottom line is, there is not one star athlete that wants or needs the limelight that is showered on them by the MSM. All they want is to be left alone to play the sport they excel in............
As a post script to my previous comment, both Mantle and Ruth, if playing today, would have been excoriated in their end days for their known philandering and alcohol binges but not before the MSM sports writers made their fortunes on reporting their heroics on the baseball fields........
He’s a wannabe military sniffing douche bag. I’ve met many over my 24 year army career. The quotes by the SEAls saying Tiger only did the “fun” stuff sums it up perfectly. That plus him not picking up the check when they went out to eat. What an ass.
The writer seems to paint a gloomy picture although it might not be that way. Maybe he loves to spend time with his kids and staying away from the limelight? Not much said about his children.
I don't think I would offer you a true picture in trying to explain it. The author does a great job of drawing you into the story. I know he's quirky and a bit reclusive, but thinking of him sitting alone in a 40,000 sq ft gated mansion playing video games is a dismal picture.
I believe his life was destined for ruin before he was out of high school. When he was young and played in junior tournaments or at more exclusive golf courses; his dad could have said walk tall and show them who you are. Instead he told him, "They don't want you here."
