Anyone who thinks it’s enough to rest an argument on “settled science” or a “scientific consensus” ought to read about John Yudkin.

I ate sugar every day as a kid in the 50s. I got chubby by age 12 but then it all went into 6’1”of height. We played outside every day after school. It wasn’t our choice necessarily. If it wasn’t pouring out we were told to go out and play and don’t come in till dinner time.

Sugar isn’t the problem. Sedentary lifestyle is.

Thanks for posting. There are a lot of ‘settled science’ examples like this. Regarding diet, IMHO it doesn’t have to be that complicated. Just make yourself eat a few relatively ‘boring’ things each day (a salad without much dressing; an apple or two), try not to eat out much, don’t snack, and always stay just a little bit hungry. Add to that some form of daily calorie burning exercise and you will be OK.

I also think that one of the secrets to staying thin is to stay relatively happy in life. For too many people eating is a form of self-soothing and stress relief. Ultimately, if you become overweight, it just becomes another source of stress and unhappiness.

There really is no reason why you should have to buy bigger sized clothes as you age. Seriously. Nonetheless, it is an accepted societal norm.

I pretty much road a bike or walked everywhere I went until 18 when I joined the Army.

At about 16 1/2 I could borrow the family car on Friday OR Saturday night for a date - if I filled up the gas tank.

Sugar isn't the problem

Granulated cane sugar isn't within reasonable limits. It's the highly processed crap that is. Whole grains are fine. Again, it's the highly processed stuff that destroys the body.

You're correct that sedentary lifestyle is. Look around. Oldtimers who continue to be active, with a lot of walking or gardening, stay very healthy. It's all it takes....just don't stay in one place for hours on end.

A) Science is never settled.

B) The dietary “advice” promoted by the government—high carb, low fat—is largely responsible for the obesity epidemic currently gripping the US. A high protein, low carb arrangement is vastly superior when it comes to losing/maintaining weight.

C) Sedentary work/lifestyles don’t help. Burning off more calories than you take in is essential.

In all honesty, I’ve given up trying to figure out what I’m supposed to eat. Every diet seems to contradict the next, and when you read about a guy who worked out and was a veggitarian (Michael Clark Duncan) dying in his forties of a heart attack, it makes it even harder.

I mainly try to avoid foods I know aren’t overly healthy (pizzas, fast food, fried foods, etc) and stay active. I’m a bit on the pudgy side, but I’m willing to bet I’ve got plenty of muscle under it. And when I see people in the ER who are half my age, yet need help getting out of their beds, I know I’m in good shape.

I've read Yudkin, and he was correct. Sugar is a much bigger problem than sedentary life.

I was just like you, Vaquero, and with a huge sweet tooth. Sugar (where the fructose molecule is half of all table sugar) damages livers if eaten in the large quantities that Americans now consume. And then the Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver disease that occurs, progresses in many cases to liver cancer, which is the only cancer on the rise and is not very treatable.

A young adult human body can only detoxify about 30 grams of fructose (about 60 grams of table sugar) per day. More than that and it slowly poisons your liver.

If you are/were a huge sugar addict, watch your liver function tests and when they start going out of whack, fatty liver disease has probably started. A sonogram of you liver will show ripples like waves of sand.

This country has an epidemic, even of 6-month-olds, because parents are feeding kids juice loaded with sugar and they have very tiny livers than can detoxify almost no sugar.

just watch... liver cancer is growing and is destined to be the number on cancer killer soon

For centuries it was “settled science” that the sun revolved around the earth. And the “authorities” at the time tried to suppress anyone who didn’t agree. Sound familiar?

Your scientific proof of this preposterous assertion?

Yudkin’s plight should be a cautionary tale to anyone who thinks we should blindly follow a scientific consensus, particularly when it involves extraordinarily complex entities"

That's a far too mild statement. The term "scientific consensus" is, itself, a denigration of real science. The true scientific method requires repeated rigorous experiments to validate an hypothesis. Arm chair consensus, especially by the untrained, is completely irrelevant. As Einstein himself said: "a single experiment can prove me wrong".

For the record, excessive caloric intake of pretty much any type can lead to ‘fatty liver’. There is some data that a ketogenic diet can help prevent/treat non-alcoholic fatty liver, but those on ketogenic diets tend to consume less calories, so this too may be related to overall caloric intake.

At the cellular level, the metabolism of all food sources (i.e. carbohydrates, sugars, fats, protein) is highly interactive, so it isn't as though there is a totally separate and independent metabolic pathway for any of these fuel sources. If cells see high levels of fatty acids, they decrease their metabolism of sugars. If they see high sugar levels, they shut down their metabolism of fats (Randall effect - known for a long time). Eat a balanced and diverse diet with less calories and you will be OK.

By the way, I'm not arguing against your points, and I do think that having kids drinking sugar-filled juices and sodas (and now sugar-filled and fat-filled coffee drinks), along with other poor dietary choices is a very bad thing.

You can count sugar, carbs, grains, processed foods, and throw in the phase of the moon but it will come down to this; all calories consumed but not expended will become fat.
