PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A new study suggests that long-term use of common heartburn medications could cause serious kidney damage.
Researchers believe one specific class of drugs can increase the risk of kidney disease, and failure.
That includes popular brands like Prilosec, Nexium, and Prevacid, which are all available over the counter.

Bummer. Esophageal cancer or kidney failure.
Buh-bye kidneys.
A teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water is all I’ve.ever used for heartburn. Works like a charm within seconds.
Heartburn is just your body’s way of saying you have been eating way too many things that make you acid and that you should eat some vegetables (any vegetables with the exception of those like corn, yams, sweet potatoes, or others with carbs in them) to make your body more alkaline.
I’ve been hearing alot of bad stuff about the PPI’s.
And from what I hear, the damage they do is irreversible!

Any medication taken long term (years) is going to have deleterious effects.
Heartburn is often caused by eating too much sugar
Yep. Without my Prilosec I can get reflux from water.
Course I might lose some weight. Lol
Whenever I stayed on Prilosec too long I started getting vertigo.
Then you have a very mild case of heartburn. For me, a teaspoon of baking soda would work for all of 45 seconds or so. Then would need another teaspoon. This would go on for a few dozen repetitions or so until I stroked out.
Some folk remedies do work for me like raw Apple cider vinegar. But I could only stomach it for a few days at a time.
So it’s 40 mg omeprazole for me daily.
I’ve heard/read Dr’s prescribe Prevacid to babies for reflux!
Young babies too, newborns..We think our baby has slight reflux, spits up
alot but that’s what babies do right?? No way would I have him take Prevacid..but that’s just me.
Amen. When I told my doctor I was taking two a day, he asked if I really needed two, which I said I did, he said nothing else.
Zantac doesn’t work for me but another histamine-2 blocker, famotidine does. (But not as well as the PPIs).
I hear ya. Some folks have chronic issues with heartburn, and for them, simple home remedies don’t always get it.
No, a lot of babies spit up so much you do wonder how much nutrition they are taking in! It’s mostly very normal. Slowly the spitting up stops over a period of time.
A new study suggests....
Researchers believe....
And does not include the answer to these four questions:
1-Who are the researchers?
2-Who/what funded the study?
3-What are the specifics and methodology of the study?
4-In what respected peer review publications was this study published?
Is fish wrap, nothing more. Drivel from semi literate ersatz journalists.
You’re right, I can see it be a problem if baby not gaining weight.
Prilosec hasn’t bothered me at all. Been on it for years and For the first time can eat or drink anything I want. I was so miserable for a lot of years. Everything made me sick.
