Ending the drought in the West will require rainnot too much rainand smarter ways to collect and store that water. But something else that can keep things moist? Believe it or not: Beavers.
According to a story in Water Deeply, a group of ecologists have a plan to help repopulate the Central Coast of California with Castor canadensis, the large beavers which once roamed the state in great numbers. (Not to be confused with their ancestors, giant beavers that were seven feet long.) The idea is that beavers are natures hydrologists, engineering the way that water travels through the landscape:

Just get back the water rights California had until Jerry Brown gave them away as Governor decades ago, and for nothing I might add.
California always had droughts, we are a dry area, but we were never allowed to build in Southern CA without water rights from the north and after three good years of rain Jerry Brown gave them away and we suffer his executive action.

If that’s their plan, I’ve got at least two families of beaver in my pond that I will donate for this worthy cause. Come by and live trap them out and ship ‘em out west.
