His heirs will probably have to sell the team to pay the death tax.
The team was probably put into a trust arrangement long ago just for this eventuality. The heirs will have a tax liability, but good estate planning will keep them from selling the team.
RIP Mr. Snyder. The Flyers will play the Capitals in the first round of the playoffs. Most people don’t know that he basically was responsible for bailing out the Caps back in the late 70s when the Caps were going to fold. I’m no Caps fan but they’re a great team. Hope to see some tribute from the Caps side!
Ed Snider bought pro hockey, Lord Stanley, Kate Smith and Sarah Palin to Philadelphia, but best of all, with the help of his Canadian friends he conquered the Red Army fake amateur hockey team.
RIP.
That was maybe the most classic ice hockey game ever played IMO, because it was when communism came up against the Philly attitude. The Russians were all professionals and everyone knew it. Trivia Note: The Russians were told they wouldn’t get paid if they didn’t return to the ice by the Flyer’s loud mouth announcer Gene Hart, who spoke fluent Russian.
And the rest of the NHL hated the Flyers until they became their bullies for one day.
So many great stories from a humble man. The face of a franchise for 50 years. As one story goes, a player suffered a heart attack during a game in the early 1970s. The player never played again. Snider gave the player a position as a scout and made sure his children received financial support.
And IIRC, Kate Smith’s family asked Snider to be a pallbearer at her funeral. “God Bless America.”
Yes...amazing how that works. If my memory serves me I believe that only the Flyers defeated the Red Army team in a series of games in the US. You don’t forget that level of hatred easily.
