We simply must save all of the children!
A 'CASH FOR COMPOSITE METALS' program is dearly needed!
Simply applying composite metal foams over baby buggies and bassinets might save a child! This program would employ many unskilled and jobless from the dregs of society.
Please support the 'CASH FOR COMPOSITE METALS' program by calling your congressman!

LOL. The timing is pretty phenomenal.

Bad news for bullets this week: Researchers at North Carolina State University have developed a super strong armor material that literally turns bullets to dust upon impact. In a rather dramatic video recently posted online, an armor-piercing bullet is shown essentially disintegrating as it impacts the armor. Check it out: (video at link) The armor plating shown in the video is made in part from composite metal foams, or CMFs, which are both lighter and stronger than traditional metal plating used in body and vehicle armor.

Better add a good anti-spalling coat to that armor, or the fragmentation injuries will still put the wearer out of action.

I am so glad that I’m too old to have to worry about stuff like this on the battlefield.

So they 30-06 AP ammo?
Don’t know if this stuff is more effective than other armor but if it is less costly then it should gain some widespread use.

Looks to have the potential for very light armored vehicles.
It probably would not stand up to repeated hits in the same spot; but for the occasional strike, very impressive.
The big question that they do not answer is: How heavy is it per square foot?

And that projectile was an AK47 ‘armor piercing’ round!

It is used in a three layer arrangement, with Kevlar as one of the layers.

That was the first thing I was wondering, especially with the other tidbit on the armor.
Earlier testing has demonstrated that CMFs can withstand extremely high temperatures and effectively block x-ray, gamma ray and neutron radiation.

I believe they wrote 7.62x63. That is a 30-06!

Okay we get it that you don’t want to solve a little old math problem. The answer is 5.
