An Associated Press-GfK Poll released Thursday finds Donald Trump’s “unfavorable” numbers are nearing 70 percent. The AP reports:
Seven in 10 people, including close to half of Republican voters, have an unfavorable view of Trump, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll. It’s an opinion shared by majorities of men and women; young and old; conservatives, moderates and liberals; and whites, Hispanics and blacks a devastatingly broad indictment of the billionaire businessman.
Even in the South, a region where Trump has won GOP primaries decisively, close to 70 percent view him unfavorably. And among whites without a college education, one of Trump’s most loyal voting blocs, 55 percent have a negative opinion.
It’s worth noting that none of the top candidates are above water in this poll. Ted Cruz is at 26-59 and Hillary Clinton is at 40-55. Still, Trump has the highest negatives and those numbers seem to have shifted some time in the last month:
As you can see, Trump’s unfavorable numbers have been hovering in the high 50s since last July. Again, that’s roughly where Ted Cruz and Hillary Clinton are now. But the current poll shows a 13 point jump in the “very unfavorable” numbers as well as a 6 point drop in the total favorable numbers. Not surprisingly, the number of people who say they would not vote for Trump also jumped upward in this poll:
What’s not clear is why Trump’s unfavorable numbers are peaking at this moment. Yes, he had a bad week in the media but when hasn’t he had a bad week in the media? It seemed for months that none of his comments or Twitter attacks could damage him, but the poll suggests something has changed recently. Was it the attack on Ted Cruz’s wife that was a bridge too far? Was it his comments on abortion last week? Without knowing what it is that did the damage how can he try to recover?
Respondents to the AP poll even rated Ted Cruz more honest than Trump. Asked if the word “honest” described each candidate, 56 percent said it did not at all describe Trump compared to 36 percent who said the same for Cruz. Trump has taken to calling Cruz “Lyin’ Ted” in public appearances for the past several weeks.
The good news for Trump is that he appears to be crushing both of his rivals in New York, with a Monmouth poll this week showing him breaking 50 percent. A convincing win in his home state could help rally his supporters and maybe give him a chance to turn some of these unfavorable numbers around before the convention.
People pound on Trump so hard, makes me want to support him. He;ll do just fine.
I think Nixon and LBJ could have won a 2nd or 3rd(obviously couldnt run prez again, maybe some postmaster or other office) in today’s circumstance with Super PAC, social media if they really tried for example, even if you assume these Trump figures are accurate.
Rallies point to a base of support but don’t present a picture of what voters in general will do. Just to pick another example, evangelist Joyce Meyer gets as many people to come to her rallies as Trump gets to come to his, but she would never be able to obtain general support from the American people.
“Funny...I see Cruz doing the same thing with his smug and sanctimonious persona.”
I think that’s true enough, but with time the opposite happens and people begin to see the depth of his thought and commitment and seriousness.
Might it be because the electorate has begun to take the nominating process seriously, have begun to recognize that this reality television character might actually become nominated for president of the United States and they recoil from the prospect. There is always a lag time between a news events and its discernible impact on the electorate. Maybe the clock has finally run out after so many false starts.
The problem is not Trump's, it is ours. If we nominate him, he gets slaughtered in the general election by his own negatives, if we fail to nominate him he breaks the party apart and we get slaughtered in the general election. Either Way, Trump puts Hillary in the White House.
Maybe the electorate are recoiling at the calamity which Donald Trump and a minority of the Republican electorate visit upon us: Hillary in the White House: a walking collection of negatives approaching even Donald's.
Poll sounds about right to me. It amazes me though that 30% could possibly view the man in a favorable light. For myself, holding my nose to vote for him will be even worse than doing so for McCain and Romney. He is THAT repugnant.
Cruz unfavorable rating is worse than Hillary and he hasn't even been attacked by the media or the Dems yet. He absolutely no chance of bringing in new or crossover voters.
Ted is absolutely the most unelectable candidate in the race.
As soon as it hits 98%, I’ll know its real.
Good grief, this is going to be our nominee?
Trump supporters don’t see this, or just refuse to see it. Very few people like Trump and even less trust him.
These negative keep getting higher too.
One common thing we hear from Trump fans is how Reagan trailed Carter by 30% and had high negatives in 1980 as well. It was in January 1980 where Reagan was down by 30%. By April the race was even. Trump is going in the opposite direction His negatives are getting higher and Hillarys lead is getting bigger.
Mark my words, by summer Trumps negatives will be near 80% and Hillary will be up on him by more hat 20%.
We better start practicing saying “Madame President”.
Well, with the non-stop 24/7 media hit pieces, it makes perfect sense that those who eat up the lies of the media would have a negative perception.
This is no believable. BS
Florida primary election, and others. That’s what matters.
I do not like Trump but that being said if he is the nominee I will vote for him
Total BS!
.
Trump needs to lighten up once in a while. Poke fun at the felon and the commie too. His kids say their Dad has a great sense of humor; we need to see that. This will win friends and influence people:
Poll finds 70% of Americans believe you’re lucky to get 50% of Americans to agree on anything.
Checked the article again:
“Seven in 10 people, including close to half of Republican voters, have an unfavorable view of Trump”
IOW they had a lot of Democrats in their poll... and more than half of the Republicans did NOT have an unfavorable view of Trump. More media attempts to drive opinions, not report them.
Ted wrote checks to Carly and Walker.
