Last Friday, four days before Wisconsinites would cast their ballots, Ted Cruz, John Kasich, and Sarah Palin headlined an event for the Milwaukee County Republican party. Donald Trump, whose unconventional campaign rests almost entirely on his public appearances, had left it to Palin to carry the banner for him while he jetted off to Washington, D.C. There, he would cap a dismal week by sitting down with Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus for a remedial lesson in delegate allocation.
Its looking as if he will need it. Cruz trounced him in Tuesdays Wisconsin primary, 50 to 33 percent, with 73 percent reporting, making a contested convention more likely in July. The results were significant in another way, too. Trump has mostly over-performed, astounding political onlookers at every turn. Wisconsin marks the first contest in which he has, arguably, underperformed, ceding to Cruz what had been an eleven-point lead in late February, as measured by a Marquette University poll, for a 28-point reversal over the course of just five weeks.
I think Wisconsin is significant because its the first state that he was on track to win that he is going to lose as a result of his demeanor, temper, and comportment as a presidential candidate, says Steve Schmidt, who managed John McCains presidential campaign in 2008.
Wisconsin was always going to be difficult terrain for Trump. Though the state has plenty of rural areas populated by the sorts of lower middle-class voters who have fueled Trumps campaign, and hosts an open primary, in which Democrats and independents are free to cast ballots, it also has an unusually unified, politically sophisticated Republican electorate thanks to the bruising battles its governor, Scott Walker, has led it through in recent years.

Oh geeze didn’t need to
Th entire MSM cable networks and radio hosts in WI were nonstory anti trump
Just the prudish WI GOPe voters. They are now history. Onwards to Trumpland!
Even the voting machines knew what a nasty guy trump was and refused to register his votes
Reported in multiple counties
As far as Trump goes it looks like how we lose general elections. Lotsa’ land, not enough voters. Cruz on the other hand.....
If not Trump, they better be Ready for Hillary. I like Cruz but he is just a roadblock now, not a President in 2017 or ever unless Trump gets in and changes the landscape.
Thanks Silver, do you have a county ( colors denoting candidates ) map you can link too for a visual to put last night into context? Thanks in advance if you have one !
are you proud to be the establishment now?
We sure in h#ll could have used it with that laggard Romney in 2012, that is for dang sure..
laggard-good word for Romney...he clearly didn’t want to be president; his game was accruing power and influence in the GOP...
Cruz on the other hand.....
you really think a tongue talking establishment guy who despises gays and abortion will be able to defeat either hillary or bernie? cruz is too far to the right.
you just posted an article from the establishment National Review saying how more republicans have voted against Trump, well it seems it is not about land, but about who gets more votes and that is Trump with over 2 million more.
As for land then we have had 3 swing state possibly 4 if you include NH.
cruz came third in 3 of them and never won a single county in FL, VA where we need to win, so if you want t spout the establishment crap then get the facts right.
Just wait till the media turn on him lie they did to McCain and Romney and you will see his voters acting all surprised.
Funny how the populous counties have such extremely different vote patterns than do the rural ones.
that’s why I chuckle every time I hear someone pontificating about how the electoral college was designed to prevent the populous vote from obscuring the rural vote...
I was kinda half expecting iCarly to stand up and give Ted’s victory speech, but then I remembered there wasn’t any ‘sex scandal’ involved in WI on election day.
How the hell is he fighting the media. He gets all the air time he wants FREE, he has spent nothing on Radio or TV. He acts like a petulant child, says the most outrageous things and they report it.
Or the more accurate way to look at it, ANTI-tRump vote 62+%
Trump didn't carry WI, see my reasons in this thread, he didn't carry OH ( But will if the nominee ) because of Kasich. IMHO it is onto NY which The Donald will win but more importantly PA. I want to see how big Trump's PA win is.
IMHO the action is in the rust-belt States, aka MI, OH, PA.
If Trump can carry them ( via the Harley riding Blue collar UAW Types ) it is over for Hilda or Bernie.
IMHO no way in h@ll can I see Ted carrying MI, OH, PA, he ain't got it period, we loose.
The exit polls here said Kasich voters would have voted Cruz 51-13 had Kasich not been in the race.
