Short Bytes: Microsoft and Canonical, Ubuntu Linuxs parent company, are partnering to allow you to use Ubuntu on Windows 10. The official announcement is expected to be made at Microsofts BUILD 2016 developer conference later today. This partnership is expected to integrate Windows and Linux on the developer desktop.

Nor just how they will do it.
I would prefer windows to run under a Linus kernal so I would have the full power of Gnome 3 and some of its great packages.
Heard of this?
I use Umbuntu on Windows 7, virtualbox.
Microsoft’s push to Windows 10 has pushed me completely over to Linux. My computer works faster. I’ve discovered I can work with the latest version of Fedora without making any compromises in terms of hardware or application software. The user interface has markedly improved over the years, as well.

This combination of Windows 10 and Ubuntu will be aimed at developers. Linux fans shouldnt expect Ubuntu to come along with its Unity interface. Instead, itll rely on Bash and CLI tools like make, gawk, and grep.
Having said that, Microsofts target audience are developers, not desktop users.
Windows 10 has nothing I want. Linux does it all.
I would think this would be the last thing MS would want. Just glancing at the issue, how does it help (read “increase revenue”, market share, etc.) MS?

And with Seamless Desktop, it’s the best of both worlds!
I’m guessing that with parts of Hyper-V built into Windows, it might be more efficient to run a guest than via Virtualbox.
For the VAST majority of home users, this is exactly the case. I converted my Mother-In-Law (67 years old) to Linux Mint and she loves it. She uses it for email and web to manage her bills.
Since she had a Vista machine that barely worked due to MS bloatware, she was thinking she would have to buy a new computer. I loaded the DVD, let her play with it and she loved it. Much better performance. So I did a local install and she has been running it for several months now.
Ernest- I had read somewhere ocne that ubuntu is going more mainstream and becoming more like windows inthat they are doing some of the same spyware crap that windows is now doing- I don’t know if this is true or not- I’ve asked around on the issue- but the best some say is “I’ve heard that too’ but can’t corroborate it- I’ve also read that peopel aren’t pleased with the direction ubuntu has been going lately-
again, I don’t know if any of this is true or not- it’s just what I’m running across online (I use linux mint as main os for all Internet work- and have windows 10 in dual boot which i do not allow access to Internet at all- I realize linux mint is a derivative of ubuntu- which is why I’m lookinf for an alternative- I would liek to use debian, but i can’t for hte life of me figure out how to download and install the few linux programs I like such as mouse gestures, drivers for vid card etc- I can’t figure out hte complicated synaptic package manager- I’ve had no problems installing those tights and others with the ubuntu software package- i just wish debian would go to something easier l iek that- at least have an easier version for newbies like me)
[[I would prefer windows to run under a Linus kernal]]
me too- I don’t like having to dual boot, and virtual machines don’t really cut it for the work i do in photoshop unfortunately-
Why?
[[Hmm, what’s the point?]]
For those that use windows programs and games- Yep- you can run some games in linux, but not nearly as many as in windows- nor as good usually- and photoshop is a major program people rely on=- Yep- there’s gimp for linux, but gimp is not photoshop- close, but there are some important differences that people don’t want to switch to gimp-
[[Microsofts push to Windows 10 has pushed me completely over to Linux. ]]
Me too- linux mint is now my operating system for onlien work
If you find you need windows for things like games or software like photoshop, you could dual boot and not allow windows 10 to access INTERNET- and you can download windows .iso 10 for free and use for free- I prefer runnign it in dual boot as opposed to virtual machine- in a VM programs run too slow in my opinion)
See #6!
Seems like a weak reason. You can do already anyway. Why doesn’t MS just add those cmds or equivalent to Powershell?
I’ll stick with Linux Mint with a sprinkling of Cinnamon on top.
But my key requirement is Gnome 3 with the accessibility option of zoom,
So I moved from Mint to Fedora based distros and am current;y running the Korora Gnome Distro which works well for me.
But check Fedora for support of those key packages you mention.
I have no idea whther they might
