One of the nuclear reactors at Hanford has had a scram. That means the cooling failed and the reactor automatically shut down.
The news reports say they are checking it out and will restart when it's safe.
I live real close to the reactor.
When I was Plant Hatch (GE BWR) we had a SCRAM for the reason I stated.
The point is, there are lots of reasons for a scram and not in of itself a reason for panic.
Washington State east of the Cascade Mountains
Could have been a false scram by maintenance personnel. If the personnel scram, then you should get worried.
Not bad. But I would note that the concentration of fissionable material in a reactor is such that it cannot possibly cause a nuclear explosion. The un-concentrated fuel itself provides enough space and moderation between the fissionable nuclei to ensure that the reaction cannot happen fast enough to create a nuclear explosion.
Explosions in nuclear plants are from water flashing into steam or from the buildup of hydrogen gas.
One of the funniest parts was when they told Garret Morris to go in there and mop up that water on the floor. That was one of my favorite SNL skits.

"Hi, everybody. As First Lady, I'd like to say I have nothing against nuclear power, honey. It's the best thing that ever happened to me."
So in other words it worked as designed?
Thanks.
It’s a damn shame we don’t have molten salt thorium reactors, those things can be scrammed by just turning off the power.

Hey, I live in Horn Rapids and my warning alarm did not go off. Should it have?
Who’s got a picture of Johnny pulling the plug? “Just kidding!”
I have lived here for 50 yrs. or more. Never heard of that plan. They DID however build a golf course and now there are hotels etc; over what used to be the sewage treatment plant, which was called the Rose Bowl, because it was painted a pinkish color. That is just as you enter into Richland on George Washington Way.
I worked for the City of Richland when they planned that development. Where the old Sham-Na-Pum golf course driving range was located was used as an old garbage dump site and they did find some hazardous stuff there but nothing radioactive
