The saga of which I sing today is a tale most remarkable: My song comes from Valhalla, the Hall of the Slain, where war-heroes go to their rest. All those who have fallen in the fight, and borne wounds yet toiled unto death, from the beginning of the world, are come to the company of the great god Odin.

The Watchtower — short story by Lord Dunsany
A ghost haunts a tower in Provence, waiting for the Saracens to attack. A tourist tries to help the ghost rest:
I said, There has not been a Saracen either in France or Spain for over four hundred years.
And he said, The Saracens! You do not know their cunning. That was ever the way of the Saracens. They do not come for a while, no not they, for a long while, and then one day they come.
Dunsany wrote this some time around 1920.
Ok, I have dropped a few +infinity comments before. That’s not enough for this one.
+0/0 (which represents a set including every number from 0 to infinity)
Another writer who needs to read a history book. The biggest falsehood in this story is who killed Roland. It wasn’t the Muslims, it was the Christian Basques. As for placing a liege of Charlemagne in Valhalla, well, that is as strange as it gets. First off, a Christian of that era would find the imagery offensive. Second, the followers of the old Gods would not look kindly at any of Charlemagne’s men ending up in their afterlife. If Roland ended up in Valhalla, those around him would kill him all over again. Especially since Charlemagne had 4500 followers of the old Gods killed at one sitting at the massacre of Verden during the Saxon Wars.
you assume the author of this story is “Roland” as you know in the literature. If there are falsehoods within this piece I suggest you take them up with author and Breitbart-not me.
And all this time I thought Roland was a headless Thompson gunner....
Also, Valhalla and the "die and go to the valhalla and party" is exactly like the Islamic vision of 72 virgin heaven
I would suggest any mis-understandings you have about this post to contact the author > I am not responsible for re-translating his/her meanings nor responsible for any historical references.
Suffice to say, those who have a background in history, historical research, literature, etc.. will have no problem in understanding the depth and reach of the author’s intent.
Charlemagne was a brave champion of Christendom -- he fought not for "the west" -- which had no meaning then, but for all of christendom: east and west.
Duh -- and what about the East? The Orthodox Byzantines were battling the Moslems as long, while the Oriental church and the Assyrian church were ground under Moslem rule but survive to today and the non-Christian Zoroastrian and Hindu and Buddhist lands were also ravaged
exactly — the author seems to have not heard of the Saxon wars — Hitler took the Saxon wars as valid reason for his own attack on Christianity
I do have a background in those fields and the depth and reach of the author's intent is quite inaccurate -- he could have used different imagery to talk about the war against Islam -- it's like Charlemagne using MOhammad's army as justification for attacking the Saxons.
I am NOT the author yet I am posting this.
You should have been around when this piece was initially posted here on FR- no one had a problem with it at all.
Regardless of your “background” one would think your slinging arrows at a “poster” who hardly qualifies as the author could perchance make you think about your own completely unwritten educated reply. If you want to fight fire with fire then man up , give it a go & provide all the readers here your scholarly rebuttal. Don’t direct it to me either-if you were responsible for every mistake in any post you have posted here on FR from other sources you’d
be up in a shite pile wouldn’t you? and no shovel to boot.
Do you have a problem with history as how the author re-iterated? take it up with the author on Breitbart .
No one has forced you to read the link-act like a academic, man up & direct your comments to the author.
Already done this — now you, newbie, you man up and consider that you posted the article
