On Trade, Sanders is More Dangerous and Trump More Illiterate
Reason ^ | March 15, 2016 | Shikha Dalmia

...

Trump is a 200 pound, walking-talking economic fallacy. This is what he bellows in his stump speech:

What is the United States trade deficit with Mexico, Japan and China? Let's start with China. Almost $400 billion per year. If you have a company when you're losing $400 billion you've got to do something very fast. We don't. We've been losing hundreds of billions of dollars per year, frankly for decades. It's not going to happen any more.

It is unclear whether he really believes that a trade deficit is tantamount to “losing” money or whether he’s just saying it because he thinks that’s the level of comprehension of his audience. Either way, it is hard to pack so much stupidity in so few words.

For starters, a trade deficit only means that America — or rather, American companies and consumers — are buying more from China than selling to them. This means we are getting something from China for the money we give it, namely, goods and services that we presumably value more than pieces of paper. In any non-barter economy everyone has a running “trade” deficit with someone and “surplus” with someone. I routinely buy dresses (way more than should be legal, actually) from my dressmaker and sell her nothing at all, but that does not mean I am “losing” money. I get something in return. Maybe Trump is not worried about a trade deficit but a budget deficit. Maybe he thinks we are buying more goods from China than we can afford. But that’s a wholly different issue. When I buy a dress, I can pay for it by: dipping into my savings; working a few hours extra; or taking a loan — none of which has anything to do with the dressmaker.

Put Your Donation Where Your Mouth Is: Who do you think will win the Republican Nomination?

opinion | 23 March 2016 | ShivaFan

This is simple. If some are so sure who has the momentum and will get the Republican convention, put your money (donation to FR) where your mouth is.

Personally, I would set this bet at $100 as fair game, but I think some are also suffering under the Obama “recovery” so I think a $40 bet in more fair.

Here would be the bet. Pick who you think will get the Republican nomination below by responding BET (name) in upper case. If your choice does NOT get the nomination then you donate $40 dollars to FreeRepublic.com support donation.

What do you say? This isn’t really gambling, just sort of a fun way to donate to Free Republic if you are wrong.

WHO WILL WIN THE REPUBLICAN NOMINATION? CHOOSE ONE NAME, NO SECOND CHANCES LATER. IF YOU ARE WRONG, YOU DONATE $40 DOLLARS TO FREE REPUBLIC:
Choices
BET TRUMP
BET CRUZ
BET KASICH
BET OTHER

That is, in fact, losing to China. I want China buying our stuff.

I agree, however my post was only about the title line.

It seems that title lines have become little more than place holders for what were once headlines.

Yeah, we are buying Walmart trinkets, and the Chinese take those American $$ and buy our factories to ship the jobs overseas.

One of the reasons why I’m not a libertarian is because they write absolutely stupid pieces on trade.

This woman won a Bastiat Prize!?

The Bastiat Prize is a journalism award given annually by the Reason Foundation. In 2011 and before it was given by the International Policy Network. The Bastiat Prize recognizes journalists whose published works "explain, promote and defend the principles of the free society."
Frédéric Bastiat is rolling in his grave!

Lady imagine I only sell eggs and you only sell chicken feed. I buy all the chicken feed you can provide but you refuse to buy my eggs because I am not your preferred race, ethnicity or ideology. Then we have a problem. You can take your chicken feed and shove it back in your chickens!

You need to read "Ce qu'on voit et ce qu'on ne voit pas" for the first time.

Haha she has connections to one of the richest families in India who love the cheap labor express. China, India, Japan, Mexico etc thrive on trade surpluses with US by exploiting their cheap labor at home.

If the Chinese tax or ban American exports (which they are presently doing), Chinese exports should be taxed or banned. If the Chinese choose to allow genuine* free trade, quit manipulating their currency, and adopt the gold standard, we can lift the tariffs. This is not complicated.

*As Rothbard said, you can’t have free trade if you have a treaty declaring free trade. You’d think these pseudo-libertarian fools would advocate for the repeal of NAFTA and CAFTA, but to the Reasonites I guess Rothbard wasn’t a libertarian.

Is Shikha Dalmia stupid? Does s/he believe, truly, that DT is “illiterate”??

Trump has accomplished more BUSINESS DEALS and forgotten about them than Shikha Dalmia ever done in h/is/er life.

Trump is giving STUMP SPEECHES, Shikha Dalmia. He isn’t engaging in detailed nuance and negotiation with envoys.

His argument seems to be fairly simple: trade deficits are NOT GOOD for our economy. They need to be BETTER. We need to be able to SELL MORE GOODS ABROAD.

See? Something so simple even Shikha Dalmia can understand.

Selling to and buying stuff from Mexico/China/etc. isn’t BAD per se. Trump doesn’t apologize for his branded goods being made abroad. He even openly says he LIKES doing trade with other nations....but he wants AMERICA to be put FIRST.

That is refreshing.

I guess Shikha Dalmia  thought our Trade Policy was bad before NAFTA, GATT, TPP, etc.. when the United State was a Super Power in the world?  Because that is what we want to go back to.

No Shikha you are dangerous and illertate.  We know you want to off shore every good job in the U.S. to slave labor around the world.
