You know the score about Donald Trump, right? He "is playing directly to authoritarian inclinations," says Ph.D. student Matthew MacWilliams in Politico, who cites the way Trump voters rally around, among things, proposals to ban Muslims and deport illegal immigrants.
"Authoritarians obey," writes MacWilliams, who sampled 1,800 voters back in December. "They rally to and follow strong leaders. And they respond aggressively to outsiders, especially when they feel threatened."
Not so fast, say political scientists Wendy Rahn and Eric Oliver, who did their own survey and argue that Trump's followers aren't particularly authoritarian but populist in inclination.

Hillary supporters,
“We don’t think.”
The assertion that Clinton and Sanders supporters are lacking in authoritarianism is outright laughable. Such an assertion probably originates from disciples of the notorious hack Bob Altemeyer and his “work” on authoritarianism.
Sanders’ supporters cover their explicit authoritarian streak up by appeals to ‘experts’.
Weren’t the Cruz supporters on this site the ones who had a big cry about the existence of Trump supporters, and ran off to form their own website where Trump supporters are immediately banned?
Who would you invite to a party, a Cruzer or a Trumper.?
That’s the post of the year so far.
Cruz people almost all feel that they have the moral high ground. The only problem is that the more I watch Cruz the more I am convinced that he is an Elmer Gantry style flim flam man. There is no moral high ground when you are being duped.
Yeah, I noticed that as well. Curious how those who rant about anyone who has obtained any level of success are the ones who trust “experts” the most.
I wouldn’t invite one of those shut-in malcontent Cruzers anywhere. They probably are too busy yelling at their neighbors to get off their lawn to go anywhere anyway.
That is because you guys act like move on.org!! Shut down any opposition.. Your like the Far left!!!
You forgot your sarc tag
I’ve nothing against either. Hard to say without knowing the person.
I assume I’d be more likely to get along with a Trump supporter though.
This is no surprise. Most Cruz supporters view themselves as strict constitutionalists and as such, their is very little room “in their view” for any deviation for what they believe to be correct. Exhibit A is Levin, who is of such a narrow mind that he doesn’t realize that 90% of the country is not able to engage in a constructive political dialogue abut the constitution. Thus you have him calling everyone a jerk, moron, idiot, buffoon and whatever else, while savaging Donald Trump.
The other half of Cruz supporters are the religious zealots who not only think that the way they live their lives is superior to anyone else, but that their hero Teddy is on a mission from God to smite the unjust and bring peace to America. So you have for the most part, two sets of individuals completely rigid and inflexible in their thinking, thus Ted’s people being more authoritarian than Trump voters.
Authoritarianism is the dangerous side of American conservatives when they are not thinking clearly (in a state of fear or anger) and paying attention. With liberals, authoritarianism is the only side.
What a load of crap.
Trump has the Anger Vote. It is solid and is pretty big. The only way he can keep them is to keep them angry.
I’ve had the same on Twitter. It’s like a cult.
You attack Cruz supporters like we are all the same. With out Cruz supporters backing Trump I doubt he will win.
I could do the same to you. Trump supports punch black people all the time at Trump rallies.
I have stopped arguing with Trump supporters because they are set in their vote and it is pointless. Just listening to some of the Trump supporters drives me crazy. Some I would kick the crap out of in person. But I know that they only are a few ill mannered making the rest look like jerks.
But looking at that graph and seeing where this is from I know this is only a ploy to get Cruz and Trump supporters against each other. Driving us apart will get the dem in.
That graph is total crap.
It was some delusional drivel about National Review blaming Trump brown shirts, while a guy’s lying in the hospital with seven bullet holes in his back; and you don’t remember it? That’s even more disgusting.
As if to prove the point in an unintentional way, the Cruzers are already on here shouting people down and telling us how wrong we are!
So Glenn is the Tammy Fey of the political elite?
LOL...
Yea, that fits.
