Windows 7 users complain of unprovoked Windows 10 auto-upgrades (BOHICA hope ya like it)
PC World ^ | Mar 14, 2016 | Jared Newman

As Microsoft auto-upgrades more PCs to Windows 10, some users are complaining that they weren’t adequately notified.

Reports of unwanted Windows 10 upgrades have been circulating for the past few days on Reddit and Twitter, after the last Patch Tuesday. These users say they never approved or initiated the upgrade, and were dragged away from their Windows 7 (or perhaps Windows 8) installs anyway.

This is all part of Microsoft’s plan, of course. Last October, the company announced that it would reclassify Windows 10 as a “Recommended” update from older versions starting in early 2016, at which point many more users would get the upgrade without explicit permission. That reclassification began on February 1, and auto-upgrades have been rolling out ever since. If complaints are reaching a higher volume now, perhaps it’s because the rollout is getting more aggressive.

Here’s what the Recommended update looks like, according to ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley:

First, users will receive a notification saying their PCs are scheduled to receive Windows 10 in the next three or four days. Users can click a small link to cancel or postpone the update, but simply closing the window will cause the notification to appear again one hour before the scheduled update time. If users don’t cancel or postpone within that timeframe, the update will begin automatically.

At that point, the only way to back out of the Windows 10 update is to “Decline” the End User License Agreement that appears during the installation. This will cause the system to roll back to the previous Windows version (though this is a somewhat time-consuming process).

Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update > Change Settings

Radio button for "Important updates" select Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them.

That is what I have, and I just ignore it when it tells me updates are available. Could select Never check for updates and do the same thing I suppose.

The default is automatic download and install and most users never change a thing. Even if turned off, you would need to check for the crap already installed and get rid of the spy stuff listed here.

I clicked to cancel scheduled update.
I’ve heard all about how different win 10 is and I don’t want to bother with it.

Yes, maybe even RICO (any lawyer, not even decent can do this).

Class action suit.

Meanwhile Apple fends off feds wanting source code.

Hmmm. Demand Win 10 source code as solution.

I appreciate the work and time you put into fighting this problem ... but I’m done with MS... The best e:mail address I could find was for “business conduct” buscond@microsoft.com ... I sent them the following :

*******************

Dear Sirs,

I understand that you have an interest in getting all of your customers on windows 10 , however my computers video card is incompatible. If you force an upgrade on me or sneak one onto my computer I will have an unusable piece of equipment on my hands.

I do not want Windows 10.

My computer cannot use Windows 10.

I have tried Windows 10 on other devices and prefer the OS that I am currently using and have paid for.

If my computer is “upgraded” to windows 10 I will purchase a new computer to install my old hard drive(s) into so as to be able to access my work content (as noted my video will be inoperable after an “upgrade”) and I will sue Microsoft in small claims court for the cost of the new computer and the time I spend moving my files and verifying functionality at $25/hour . This will be in Orange County Florida (ninth judicial circuit).

Please exclude my computer , a HP Pavilion running Windows 7 with product id    00XXX-oem-XXXXXXX-XXXXX from any forced OS “upgrade” scheme.

The place to check for ehat crap MS has already installed is the same spot. Lefthand side of the window "View update history" I foune sorting them by name easist to get the KBxxxxx sorted in ascending order to search for the ones listed on this thread for removal.

Luckily for me, I found none of them. Probably why I have never had a single bleep about 10. None of the spy downloads or anything, most must have happened after I stopped updates almost two years ago.

I’ve had a successful experience using GWX on three different machines. I haven’t detected any downside to that program after five months of usage to ward off the unwanted Win10 upgrade.

Too bad a few more tens of millions like yourself don’t do what you did. Not to mention there ought to be a multi-billion class action lawsuit.

This was recommended to me a few days ago, and I installed it- it is supposed to protect from Windows 10 installations. (GWX Control Panel)

Thank you. I have copied/pasted your post and saved it. I shall pass it on to my customers. However, most of them are already aware because I have taught them well. ;-)

“The default condition should be having to check a box if you want an upgrade. Not “We will force you unless you tell us no!”

Exactly but this thread is filling the gap for those who are unaware.
